One can speak Irish, the other Scottish, and still can understand each other, even after hundreds of years of separation, fantastic. Our shared Gaelic heritage is to be cherished.

Gàidhealtachd no Gaeltacht! Buntata 's Prata! We're the same people with the same language! The cultural traditions of Ireland and the North West of Scotland are almost identical and we're the only folk who can "HEEEEYOO" in time to our music! ALBA AGUS ÈIRINN GU BRATH!

Many of those traditions made their way to Australia (where they've been forgotten by a lot of people, admittedly... But go to the Bush, and you'll find them still). If you ever go to a bush dance, the music and dances are pretty much identical (having played at both, I say this with certainty... "Ho-ro mo nighean donn bhoidheach" as the second tune in the Queensland Backstep, etc)... as are the "HEEyoo"s.

It's not too dissimilar to Americans, Canadians, English, Irish, Scottish, Australian, New Zealand. We all have our slang and word preference, but we can understand each other just fine.

Gaelic language and culture is so beautiful and must be revived. I'd love to see Scotland and a unified Ireland joined by a bridge or tunnel to become the Federal Gaelic Republic of Éire & Alba. We'd revive our native Gaelic culture and build close links to Scandinavia. We'd only use English for business and travel and get rid of Anglo-Saxon culture. Alba gu bràth / Éirinn go brách,

Despite the complete and irreparable damages done to disposess the Gaels of their homelands and dreams, and turn their hearts into those of strangers to themselves, this deeply woven through several centuries: my heart makes the same impossible wish.

Not looking likely lads. Have ye heard what 'revived/new Irish' sounds like? It's not like this, it sounds like English. Unless Ireland gets fully behind education in phonetics the native sounds of this language will go extinct even if school/new/anglicised Irish lives on after it

@@cigh7445 I find the concept of this being 'revived' Irish so bizarre, it's still very much alive and is the community language in various areas along the west coast. A language can't be dead when there are still native speakers, and even monolingual speakers! Is fiú í a fhoghlaim agus go háirithe ó dhaoine a bhfuil sí ón gcliabhán acu

Wow I never knew the two variants of gaelic were so mutually intelligible? Do any Irish people here understand the Scottish?

Mise freisin. Ceapaim go bhfuilim go leor Gaeilge agam chun an piosa is mó a thuiscint. Ach, tá cúpla rudai Agus abairti difriuila Agus deacaire (me too. I think that I have enough Irish for me to understand the most of it. Although, there are some things and sentences that are hard)

Many Scots come from Ireland, my own family from my fathers side come from Ireland and Irish chieftains came to Scotland around 500AD, my mothers side came from Mayo in Ireland around the potato famine, we are all one.

Bha iad a' dol do 'n Eilean Sgitheanach, ach cha robh iad a' cheilidh do 'n Sabhal Mòr Ostaig! Carsòn??? They went to Skye, but didn't visit Sabhal Mòr Ostaig! Why? It seems a no-brainer! (sorry, chan eil mòran Gàidhlig agam... tha mi ag ionnsachadh...)
