I made this video to show some of the quirks that you will have to deal with if you are a civilian (non law enforcement) looking to purchase a Ford Police Interceptor Utility.
The one in the video is a 2016 base model, no options.
Yes we all get that I say umm a lot. No need to have every other comment complaining about it. My later videos I started editing them out.

Yes there is a reason I purchased this vehicle: because it was cheap, and it had room for ham radios.

Yes I am very happy with the vehicle
No a retail Explorer would not have been better as it has no room for radios.
Yes it's cheaper than a regular explorer. I paid $24,500. Base explorers start at $32k
Yes I could talk slower and say more uhhhs. But do you really want me to do that?
Yes I understand why these quirks/features are there. You don't need to explain it. I'm merely pointing them out to people that may not know they were there if they bought the vehicle.
No it does not have ballistic panels. But it is an available option.
No I will not put a pushbar, or teardrop lights on it. I have no need for either.

It's not easy by any means. I was looking for a long time doing google searches for them. And when I found one, I had to be willing to fly there and drive back. The dealer that had mine had them listed on ebay as well as a few other car sites. Here's one with 10k on it. I work for an uplifting company and we have worked with a lot of these. I can assure you that your seats do not flip up, not even on the higher PI models. there is a lot of cold steel under those seats for the 75mph rear collision rating.

I wish you could still get a column shifter on civilian models. I really hate that huge center console that takes up soo much space! You really notice it on all the tiny modern cars that should utilize space saving as much as possible.

One of the reasons I did the dashcam install video is because I want the dashcam footage so I can show people this isn't the case. Does it happen some times? Sure. But the majority don't care.

brayden valerio I tend to agree with you. We have at least one or two people in our small town I live in that have old interceptor crown Vic's and have put antennas onto the roof. I'm sure that they don't have enough equipment to make use of 4 antennas. Some people just like to look like cops I guess. Whatever floats their boat. It's very easy to spot police impersonator vehicles, and a little brake check will test their authority, or lack thereof.

The "unlock button" is a special feature of this police model. Although annoying, it gives the cops some exercise to work off the donuts.

This explorer PI is actually a explorer sport with a 3.7L NA engine. It has heavy duty transmission, suspension, AC. The AWD system has a liquid cooling system. You $50K MDX SHAWD will overheat. This one won‘t. Try to find a new mid size SUV with 300+ HP and AWD for $25~26K before making ignorant comments.

The twin turbo version is equivalent to the Sport model. The 3.7 is standard

I also found on forscan that there is a liftgate lock feature that's on police models. You can change it with forscan.

From the up fitting side, the rear seats don’t have the option of flipping forward all the way. Just because when people like me are up fitting all the police equipment, the front partition takes up all the room the seat would need to flip forward. And the rear hatch is timed for weapons and gear, and is more of a redundancy as we usually install a timed gun lock for either an AR or 870.

Your speedometer might be "certified calibration" but that means nothing unless it has been inspected and certified by a third party company once or twice a year. Thats what it means by certified calibration. It allows police officers to ticket people for speeding by "pacing" their speed. The only way you would win the ticket is if they do not have it annually certified by a third party compamy

If the rear hatch has a keyhole (bless Ford for that), why not just use the key to open it if you've locked it and want to open it again? Does every blooming thing have to be remote-controlled?

You can easily program a replacement key fob to open the car doors and lock them. You could even get a viper alarm that has auto start and tracks your vehicle.

The reason for the rear hatch having a button... because they usually keep their heavy gear back there. Which might consist of an AR, Ammo, medical equipment, reports, etc. So to keep it more secure, it has to have an extra deliberate step to get that door opened so someone standing behind the vehicle while the Officer is in the car can't just open it up real quick on them and gain access. You did buy a Police vehicle that was designed for Police use, not civilian use.

So. basically, other than the more aggressive shift points, the only changes for the cop version are things that would be annoying or undesirable for civilian use. Guess it's not quite the old days anymore, where you could count on the cop version to have engine and chassis upgrades that would make it better than the best civilian version (obvious example being the Crown Victoria P71 with more power and a higher speed governor, but the old Caprice 9C1 had the Impala SS/detuned Corvette engine and apparently some additional chassis stiffening that the Impala SS didn't have).

No the Utility has a stainless steel (IIRC) frame stiffener added post manufacture, it has a beefed up electrical and cooling system, mine has dual air, don't know if it's a civi option or not, bunch of little things here and there.

I had a p71 interceptor crown Victoria back I the day. Loved that car,got a great deal on it. All the suspension work made it handle great, really hugged the road, the head work made it haul ass too. Only reason I got rid of mine is I was getting pulled over about 2 times a week. I wish I could pick one of those up. I see older crown Vic's everywhere for cheap but never see any of those. Hook up an exhaust or straight pipe that , you'll be smoking hemi's all day

I own 3 police interceptors a 2005 crown Vic,2012 Dodge Charger and a 2013 ford utility…love all 3 very much,i repainted all three to their original colors…o replaced all three the interiors with civilian seats…love driving them around,paid cash for all 3s.so no car payments I strongly hate car payments….it can get annoying at times strangers are ringing your door bell to see if the cars are for sale..I know they are fleet vehicles so I don’t expect much but rehability,comfort,climate control..

You CAN get a keyless entry fob for it. If you sweet talk the right guy at the parts department, you can get the fob with the trunk release on it.

All of the things you dont like are defeating the COOLNESS of having an interceptor. Before my 9C1 went out of style, nobody got in my way or passed me. They would come flying up beside me to pass then see the 9C1 stuff then back off. I had been cought in speed traps just to be waved through. I still have the car. It will be 21 years old soon and I have put very little money into it as far as maintenance goes. The LT1 engine still runs like a bat out of hell and I love those power shifts. Gotta love the old Caprice! They're still selling them to a few agencies in the states, I've heard they've got them in Iliinois. They're built off of the Holden Caprice platform and imported with the 6.0 v8. I hear they're pretty ballsy, and the brakes are mind melting!

I might try and find the Holden one of these days. Mine is actually am Impala SS 1996 without the fancy looking stuff. I also have a 1995 9c1 Caprice. I put a 96 Corvette 4 bolt main stroker in it with a Scat rotating assembly and really big cam and a pair of Trick Flow heads on it. Also new springs and 3.73:1 posi rebuild. Lots of fun. The lever used to fold down the back seat also lifts the rear up as displayed on the plastic diagram. Once you fold the seat down, lift the lever one more time, all the way up and the back will raise up

I have same ride, mine is 2014 though. Same color n same look, mine has a grill on the front! It hauls serious ass, I don't put my foot in the pedal much but this ride will get up n go, man. Has 140k miles. I take care of it, I drive my other car more cause I don't wanna beat it up n rack up too many miles. But it is nice to have. Neighbors think I am a cop lol. My brother bought a 2016 Ford Explorer police interceptor and then two months later was told to move to japan so now I have a police interceptor and it has over 117k miles on it and it still runs and drive like new and i like it more than my other explorer (it was a xlt) it gets up and goes quicker I don’t have to worry about people making messes in the back seat there is loads of room in the trunk and I agree with a lot of the issues you have granted I just put in an aftermarket centre console the one good thing tho Is on road trips people seem to not want to go slow in the left lane

I found out that in a of newer you cannot replace the factory stereo, in the USA, because a stereo shop has to muck with the ECY, which illegal in the USA under both EPA and DMCA rules. However, if you get one of these, and want to put your own stereo in, you can take it to stereo place in Mexico, not subject to US laws, and they can put one in.

theres at least one company that sells an android sat nav for it. Doesnt say anything about needing to reprogram the ECU. Not sure why the ECU would need reprogramming. can you link to where you saw this>..I could see the body control module which is not illegal to modify. I;d get that android unit, but because the radio is so integrated with the dash, they actually sell you a whole new panel, including the a/c controls. BTW, the analog speedo is not the calibrate one - the digital one is, and by "calibrated" that is something that must be maintained. Normally for a vehicle it's done with annuals (my 2015 FPIU is due, but I still have the last two years worth of signed calibration cards).

my explorer was stuck with the middle seats but I had some paper in the hinge. Try pulling both tabs that lean the seat up. Took me a few times but the middle seats finally leaned forward. Ill try to make a video to show you what I mean

Fun car to drive on #EVOC course. Yes, it smokes #CrownVicroriaPoliceInterceptoptors because of the AWD . It handles much better on turns , gearbox seems to have 2 modes, regular driving & “ pursuit “ mode where it downshifting really quickly.

hey after a lot research I ended up going with a Civilian Base model just for the creature features I like having a center console, it is white and has a 3.5 L I have had it one week now.One thing I love about the base model Steel wheels.To me I have seen too many friends jack up alloys in potholes .but My back seat does flip over it is set so the third row seat if up people can can get out, if you would like I can take pictures of the brackets .when they flip up it basically stands behind the drivers seat and you could defiantly sleep in there then .should be able to find the brackets fairly easy

The for those asking about the police interceptor badge. It means nothing. You can not get in trouble for it. It is just a model of a car. And some of the options that are in the video may not apply to all Interceptor Utilities. I have a 2016 and my rear seats are cloth, even though we ordered vinyl. It has keyless entry. And the back up camera is displayed in the radio. There is an option for it to display in the rear view mirror. Some have carpet, some don't. Also Gas mileage SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It only has a 13 gallon tank, and you get about 15-20 MPG. But mine is an EcoBoost, and I don't pay for the gas, but if you are in an area with gas stations few and far between, watch out.

I have a 2015 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility 3.7 and the issues I have are: back seat passengers can not open their door from inside, I can not connect my smart phone to use the hands free. Do you have any idea/ videos that show what I can look for behind the door panel to see if something is just disconnected? Not even going to address the phone connect issue because of the amount of wiring running everywhere! : ( I would appreciate any help you can offer on the door handle issue. Thanks!

If you pull the door panel, it should be pretty obvious that the linkage to the handle is disconnected (and hopefully not missing). Should be a matter of just reconnecting the link bar to the handle, though I've never needed to do that job so I don't know what it looks like for sure. I looked in the upfitter guide and it didn't show any pictures or anything. Yeah the base model radio doesn't have BT.

The thing your pointing too saying "No Cup holders" thats not a cup holder, its where the rear Heat/AC controls go, they run off 2 seperatw systems. Your cupholders are in the doors. & most do come with door remotes, everyone we've gotten usually comes with 3-4 fobs, the rear tailgate is easy to reprogram if you dont like the feature, & you can take out bolts under the rear seat & connect the tension wire, that will let the seats fold up

Just bought one of these with 80k i pick it up next Saturday. It was semi converted back to a civilian suv, all black leather and center consile was added back.The one key is annoying though but the bullet hole on the rear hatch adds character 😁 It also has seat belts rigged onto the front door hinges so the doors do not open fully wich is for when the officers quick stop and whip the doors open I'm told. I may leave that on to keep my passengers from hitting other cars in lots 🤷‍♂️

I didn't notice any limitations caused by the added door strapping. It's there just to give the hinges a little more strength

The front doors aren't restricted at all by the seatbelt piece, its to keep the doors from spring forward to far wheg officer's use them as cover, quick stops with doors open & if your car has ballistic panels in the doors, due to the added weight. But the doors still open up fully & rear doors open further than regular explorers due to putting people in back seats

you can contact ford customer service techs and send them the VIN and registration to prove you're the owner and they'll sent you a set of key fob. not cheap but an option for factory fob if that's a sticking point

@@__-fm6yx I own a 2005 P74 Ford Crown Vic LX Sport. 177500mi. Used. Many people ask if it's a P71 police 🚔 model. Ford ended CVs in 2011. Crown Vics have a few +s but over time they can develop major hassles. The AC unit, the intake manifold, gas ⛽️, turns. My LX Sport handles well but I had newer Goodyear all season Assurance tires, $700.

Yes, (base explorers start around $32k, this was $24k) but you don't get all the "retail" conveniences...you know, like carpet. lol.

So they programmed the trans for performance and perhaps beefed it up. How about the engine displacement, power rating and axle ratios? I removed my single disc CD player from my Tahoe in favour of a Kenwood tri bander. A D710’s main radio w/APRS is bolted inside the consoles glove box and there’s room for more. The control head is on a flip up door that hides three power ports on the dash. I’ve been fortunate with this vehicle and installing radios!

That liftgate thing seems a bit dangerous if you needed to retrieve equipment quickly as a cop. The crown vics had a trunk pop button (had them on the retail vics too but still) and its very handy it just opens the lid they should have done it here too

*go to the dealer and check and see if that one came with the keyless entry most times everything is there and all you have to do is get the fob and have it programmed for that vehicle and then you're golden, a friend of mine bought one of these that even had remote start back in it too and all he had to do was buy the new fobs for it*

yeah i watched all of the followups and updates and the only precaution is that splice into the light in the headliner with just electrical tape on it. it would have been safer to cut it splice it together with solder and then heat shrink it all together.

You can activate keyless entry option with a Bluetooth obd 2 diagnostic tool and forscan. I just got it worked a few days ago when I got my Taurus interceptor for just around $200 with brand new 5 button key fob ($100) and also enabled remote engine start. If you just want keyless entry, you can do it with around $100 including the key fob

The page doesn't have the code for the explorer but when you buy the hood switch it actually says it's for explorer, so it's somewhere and it should be easy to find, the page does have the code for keyless entry tho.
