The industrial foundries I have seen don't have a continuous flue. Either the top of the foundry is open and the Chimney starts as a conical hood into a flue of wider diameter than the opening in the top of the furnace or the furnace has a short stub which sits inside a larger flue. Both designs allow air to be drawn up the chimney cooling the gases and secondly it stops the draw of the chimney interfering with the breathing of the furnace. I think it is possible that your chimney is causing such a draw that the flow is exceeding the fans output making it act like a carburettor choke sucking fuel through the gate valve leading to a runaway.

Water jacket on that chimney ASAP! 😉 Also a spring loaded lever valve to shut off the fuel, held in the 'open' position by a piece of yarn that passes close to the furnace, that way if the flames escape they'll quickly burn through the yarn and shut off the fuel.

NOICE- LOL , This episode was brought to you by 'no F*ken trains' Spark arrestor - you should be able to make your own. ;) although as you said probably detritus from previous projects as there isnt much waste other than heat. With regards to the oil feed , one (or maybe a couple) of the people I've seen make waste oil heaters/foundry/smelters have had a drip feed system much like an IV .. one pipe in with an adjustable valve feeding into a chamber with a translucent front so that you can count drips per second then a secondary pipe out to your jetpipe. The reason you might have overfuel is once the system is running the oil is literally sucked into the system - the pressure change pulls it in like sucking on a straw so you'll you'll likely need to close your valve up a bit once your up to a good heat. I still have multiple 'out of date' fire extinguishers you can have ;) you can use them as is or cut them up for projects ::) ( I have so many donated to me for my own projects I'm never going to use). I was going to suggest a slightly taller internal lip but then you put on the rope which seems to have fixed most of the issue with smoke. Cant wait to get back on with my furnace project this year - left it a little late last year with limited time to work on it. :) Hope I have near as much success as you've had.

I messed around with a drip cup on the heater, it definitely helped for long term running, adjusting for the changing viscosity of the oil and throttling it up and down, honestly for the life of me don't know why I didn't think to fit it on the foundry. Good call! And yes, anything that expands my stockpile of extinguishers is very welcome

A couple of ideas for you, it might be worth you getting an exhaust gas temperature probe and gauge like the turbo car boys use to fine tune your fuelling, and sticking with things people do to turbo cars, how about water injection in your chimney to cure the heat/fire hazard? That's all pretty awesome - love the lifting gear for the top section, and the shed to house the thing is great, just need to tame the beast a little bit - kind of tricky now you can't see inside to see how it's doing, but you'll come up with a way soon enough. To resolve the overfuelling issue, change out that gate valve for a globe valve. According to our old pal Bernoulli, Q=VA, flowrate is a function of velocity and area. So as area decreases, velocity increases and flowrate is maintained as a constant. A gate valve is essentially an on/off valve, as soon as the gate is cracked open, velocity is high as area is low, which means that any throttling (which is friction in the flow stream) is only happening right on the lip of the gate. A globe valve has a pin or needle filling a tapered body, so throttling is happening along the surface of the taper and needle - much more surface area for the flow to be in contact with and for friction to act over.

Could you have a high temperature switch with an electric solenoid valve. Like they used to use on LPG cars. You'd need to position the switch carefully. Then it would be closed when cold, and open when hot.. which would turn the oil on and off. Aircon units will have them too if you find one of those around to pilfer. Might get some scrap copper from it too.

@strongandco
@strongandco Жыл бұрын
@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 I don't think they are designed to be self regulating. The heater has an ECU connected to a remote thermostat/control box and delivery rate is controlled by pump speed. You can control this directly by altering the hz parameter or indirectly by adjusting the thermostat (you can hear the pump slow down when you reduce the target temperature or when target temperature is achieved or speed up when you increase the target temperature). There are only two wires going to the pump so I've always assumed that the pump speed/delivery rate is controlled by varying voltage (electrical control systems are not my thing though so I could easily be wrong)

@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 Another option is to circulate the oil in a loop with a pump then tee off on the discharge side via an adjustable PRV and feed that to the burner. The PRV adjustment becomes the throttle and it automatically regulates the flow independent of the oil viscosity.

As a welding project ... cool. Unfortunately You don't know what You did. That's not a snide remark, you're not a chemist. People around start developing cancer and other unpleasent diseases. All toxic substances are released into the air during the combustion process. Waste oil (like from cars and machines) has admixtures. When You burn it there is transformation of enriching additives. Hydrocarbon pyrolysis: combustion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is a process that leads to the production of highly carcinogenic compounds. Penetration of metal compounds into the oil: Metal compounds from the metal components of the engine combine with the oil: if it is poured in the wrong place, they begin to penetrate into the soil and groundwater. Used oil contains highly poisonous metals such as lead and cadmium, as well as sulfur compounds, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including benzo(a)pyrene, with proven carcinogenic properties. In some countries this kind of foundry is prohibited. So, if You or your neighbour have something like this ... well buy a coffin. Very stupid idea to run waste oil foundry. Smart thing is to replace it with wood fireplace.

You're not invited to a lot of parties are you mate? He's not breathing in what comes out the flue and the shed is well ventilated. The rest of your fearmongering is just over the top alarmism. Vehicles burn thousands of Litres of oil a day in their engines and exhaust it and you are getting all pedantic over one little burner that probably wouldn't use as much oil in a month as the local bus service burns in it's engines in a week.

@@glumpy10 I'm invited, allways :) He is breathing fumes, the're well mixed with air and in this type of burning there is not a lot to smell - so he is not aware of it because he dont notice it, professional air monitoring device will show that there is poison in air. Airflow around buildings is "funny" - even if wind blows in one direction, air is mixed around building because of turbulences. Yes, car burn some oil, thats why You have technincal inspections allowing car to be used when in the limit, other way You have to fix Your engine. You have filters in exhausts. Since you recommend burning wood I'll point out we've just had firewood sales regulated here in blighty with claims that a single stove produces more carcinogens than 900 busses, a further total ban on wood stoves has been proposed for 2027. On the flip, I had no problem getting a commercial waste oil burner inspected and certified at work, environment agency lady turned up with a colour chart, saw it was burning clean and certified the installation. I appreciate your concern but should I believe the government of HRH king Charles III was capable of making such a mistake I would want to die of oil smoke poisoning.
