Part of the video I recorded below was shown on Channel 4- UK series "Terror in the Skies". Aired on 30 June 2013.
link: • Turbulence on flight B...
===============
Less than an hour into the flight and as we were about to be served our first meal. We were flying over the border region of Argentina/Uruguay/Brazil.
The heavy turbulance lasted for an excrutiating 10 minutes.
The pilot told us it was the worst case he experienced in his 30 years career...but he only admitted to that after we safely landed in London 11 hours later.

The key to avoid turbulence when traveling is to always book a flight that departs at least 30 min after another flight on the same route. Because if there is turbulence on route, the first planes flight computer will relay the info to the flight path database and the next planes will be routed around or over/under the turbulence.
@Dan-tj2hk
@Dan-tj2hk 3 ай бұрын
How can i be sure that the craft will fly the same route? I mean departure destination is self explanatory but will they fly exactly on the same path? The difficulty is also that there are just not many airlines that go on direct flights from lets say bangkok to vienna. What i would also say is, choose big aircrafts and nightflights

The worse turbulence I ever went through was from Toronto to London Heathrow. The plane left an hour late because the weather was so bad that the flight crew arrived late. We still took off and for 3 hours we bounced around. It was the worse turbulence I have ever been in. Two people had heart attacks and the tail winds were so strong that we ended up doing the flight in 5 hours. Somewhere over the mid-Atlantic it was over and the flight attendants didn't even ask people what they wanted to drink. They threw mini bottles around. We landed and ambulances came to the plane and removed the heart attack victims. We don't know what happened to them. I have never been so afraid in all of my life.

I think what would help a lot of anxious people is hearing something from the pilots more often. I know they have a lot on their minds while flying a plane, and talking to the passengers would be a distraction, but simply saying "hey guys we're hitting turbulence but everything is fine" would calm everyone down. On every flight I've been on there has been turbulence, never heavy but sometimes mild, and I've never EVER heard a word from the pilots or the crew, neither before we hit turbulence, nor while the plane was shaking nor when the turbulence stopped. You hear them give their speech at the beginning of the flight and then they disappear until the plane touches down

I don't care for heights and feel pretty tense during a flight. Yet, ironically, I find turbulence comforting. I suppose it is because when a flight is going smooth, you are stuck waiting for something potentially bad to happen. So naturally you start imagining scenarios. Whereas when turbulence is hitting the plane you just sort of go with it. But hey, that's me lol.

I was once on a plane sitting in a window seat during some terrible turbulence. All of a sudden this flying creature / Gremlin landed on the wing and started to tear it apart and pulverise the engine. Sensing danger and feeling naturally protective of my fellow passengers, I smashed the window with a fire extinguisher and pulled out a .38 which I had successfully managed to wrestle from a sky marshal and shot this mythical creature thus saving everyone on the flight. I write this from my padded cell in Chicago.

Two years ago was on a flight from El Paso to Atlanta and we hit the 'invisible' turbulence. Was a very clear day. It was approximately 45 minutes of just ugly turbulence. After we got out of it, dude next to me goes, "you were scared weren't you" and I replied "a little, why" and he says "you were cursing a lot". The captain actually visited with each passenger making sure they were ok. People were crying and apparently I was cursing a lot.

Was on a flight from Dallas to Washington D.C. and we hit a drop out of nowhere that felt like one of the designed drops at an amusement park, the ones where your stomach feels the butterflies for 4 or 5 seconds. One person (who wasn’t wearing the seat belt) left their seat and hit their head on the baggage compartment, and a woman puked on herself and the floor. It was one of those 100% “Just land this damn thing right now!” Moments.

I had a bad night flight from Memphis, Tn to Atlanta, Ga a few years back. It was on a regional jet. Maybe 30-40 seats. The plane was mostly empty with maybe 10 passengers. After boarding, the pilot announced that we would be going through turbulance and that there would be no drinks or snacks served and that we needed to stay seated for the entire flight. After this announcement, two guys sitting next to each other seated behind me and on the opposite side of the plane were joking about how fun it was going to be. Saying things like "it will be just like a roller coaster". Both their wives were sitting together in the next row up from them were telling them to be quiet. It was less than an hour flight, but it was by far the worst flight I have ever been on. The turbulance started maybe 15 minutes after we took off until maybe 5 minutes before we landed. The plane went through drops, bumps, up, down, and even felt like it was moving sideways at times. I was sick as a dog, seriously thought I was about to die, and no one was saying anything. About 30 minutes into the flight, I glanced back at the two couples to see if the guys were enjoying themselves as much as they had boasted before we took off. They were both sitting with their eyes barely visible looking over their wives seats. They both were pale as sheets and had their hands gripping the tops of thier wives seats in a death grip. They looked as scared as everyone else and both of their wives were holding hands and staring at the floor. If I had not been so scared and sick, I guess I might have gotten a bit of satisfaction at seeing the two fellows in that state. When we landed, all of us clapped and while we were waiting to get off the plane, the pilot rang the stewardess to make sure she and the passengers were all OK. As we all got up to get our carry-ons, the stewardess told me that it was the worst turbulance she had ever experienced and that the pilot said the same thing. Turbulance sucks!

My dad's an aerospace engineer and has worked in plane industry for over 40 years. I remember him saying there has only been 2 times or so in history of modern commerical aviation that a plane has crashed due to turbulence, both of them were back in the 60's as the planes then were not as structurally intact as they are today. Judging by this seating arrangement I think this is a 777-300er of which thus far have never crashed due to turbulence.

Helemaal mee eens. There is more to this world than just the English language)

Apart from the turbulence, it amazing how airline seats have become thinner and how IFE screens have gotten larger.

Yo viví esa horrible experiencia, viajando de chile a EEUU y pasando por Ecuador nos tocó por pasar cerca de un volcán en erupción, yo pensé que el avión se destrozaría en el aire, es aterrador.

I said that to myself too. I myself would be scared to death and panic. I would have lost all the air to breathe because I suffer from hype ventilation anyway. Greetings from Germany Berlin

I experienced this in my route to General Santos from Cebu. All the people from that flight shouted when the plane dived deep down. I thought we’re all gonna die that moment. But thank God, we landed safely.

I was on a flight like this from Mexico to Chicago, flight attendants had to suspend beverage service the entire flight. It was miserable feeling. Someone told me turbulence is equal to a car hitting potholes or rough roads.

The worst turbulence I’ve ever experienced in mid 1980s was on a short flight from Aspen to Denver first snow fall of the season. I took my breath away.

I rode aspen scareways from denver to aspen. we hit some kind of air pocket and my paperback book flew forward out of my hands and I had to walk up the aisle to retrieve it. When I saw the landing strip I was less than thrilled.

As I heard a colleague in work just the other day saying "there's no hard shoulder at 36 thousand feet". Basically saying our job is pretty damn important.

I am not really worried about the violent shaking of turbulence but what im worried of the most is that butterfly feeling when the plane drops. Here is a TIP for those people in order to MINIMIZE that butterfly feeling. Try to sit at a 45 degree angle coz for some reason it minimizes the effect of the butterfly in your stomach. Trust me it works and this is what I do all the time.
