One of my daughters was fortunately inside the airport at O'Hare for 7 hours after her flight was repeatedly delayed due to the stormy weather.

Why is it if a tornado hits a major city it's called derencho

A derecho is a large, widespread storm with sustained winds - mostly straight line winds - but tornados can be embedded within the larger storm. A similar storm hit Houston earlier this year but a substantial derecho went through Iowa in 2020 as well and did a ton of damage even without a lot tornadoes.

@@newsnowtammylynnlynn484 Because a Derecho isn't a tornado. . . A Derecho brings high power similar to a tornado, except it's only in one direction. Tornadoes blow in all directions.

And if that's a safety plan in 100 plus miles an hour wind to to leave the customer on the tarmac in a plane that's a dumb plan

and you think a workers should be outside marshaling the plane into the gate at 100 mph? And do you think air traffic controllers should be sitting up high surrounded by windows to guide planes into and out of the airport? Which plan do you think is safe, genius?

The wind gets stronger because the plane cause the turbulence on the ground that it’s due of the storm derecho in Chicago.

Sounds like the delay was longer than the actual flight . Since it as less than one third full plane it wasn't that bad you had extra room to stretch out to move around and hopefully extra meals 😊😊😊

The terminal lounge is much less safe than the plane. The walls are all glass. Nobody was in the lounge. The ground crew was all in tornado shelters.

But they left the passengers sitting on the plane unprotected. Wow. Wow. And people wonder why I don’t fly. This is why.

A plane is just 5a big roll cage. If you are locked into your seat with with seatbelts, you would likely survive, if the tornado lifted the plane and it rolled , you'd still be pretty safe and not die unless the plane is thrown and hits something at a very fast speed...but I don't think there are any records of planes with passengers being rolled and passengers or crew getting hurt or killed.
