Great video. Their called 'sausgage machines' because the turf takes the bended shape of a sausage after the machine.
@fukinwhurinjasussake12 жыл бұрын
Nice video, that turf looks a bit brown in parts, the blacker the better because black turf give out more heat.
@MrRichie18510 жыл бұрын
I'm from sligo, not sure where that's done but the sausage method actually damaged a lot a banks- water actually lies in the slots and turf banks become uneven. The hopper machine is a better method.

I have never seen triple wheels before, either. Must be quite a load - perhaps that's why they use Fiats?
@georgedoorley56287 жыл бұрын
triple is for very soft bogs , also any sinking at all would allow the water to lie and the turf would never dry , ......sank a same explorer 90 in a bog bringing out dry turf one day , had to get out the back window as could not open the doors !!!!!! pulled it out with a track digger , brought the rest of the plot out in a wheel barrow !!!!!!....with single wheel !!!!!!!!!!!!

I was planning to, but they won't be wildly popular so they go down the list a bit!

when i was about 10 i went to see my relatives in ireland around Port Laoise and when i wasnt on my great aunts chicken farm collecting eggs i was turning turf "down at the bog" by hand to help it dry faster :D (SUPER HARD WORK) the stuff is super heavy when its still wet and i remember having a massive nose bleed from the straining and having to use my uncles t shirt to stop the blood getting all over his car on the way home. this stuff is great it burns for hours and burns hot. the best part is the trailers used to be stacked so high when they transported it that bricks of turf used to simply fall off with a simple jolt in the road so just walking along the road you could gather enough turf to keep your home warm for quite a while basically free heating :D

Thanks for all that - fascinating!

Just pulling you up on your terminology they're called 'Footings' but no doubt the accent of the guy was the cause confusion. Great video, nice to see you filming something a bit different.

The machine has a digger (like a mini drainage digger) that pulls up peat from the ground and a cross-auger takes it to the extruding part which you can see.

if u ask me i wish we had never discovered that turf burns because every year we have to go up the bog, break our backs and get bit by flies but good vid.

Hi Alan. Interesting video. Never seen anything like this. The wheel arrangement on the tractor was the same as those doing the moorland restoration in the Pennines. I wonder if the bearings can take a triple wheel? regards Mark

What's the point of this cutting?? Always been wandering what you do it for?? Thanks
@balmesh10 жыл бұрын
They do it for fuel - it burns like a soft coal.
@RayzerSharpe9 жыл бұрын
+kroneharvester . As balmesh says its for heating. And for those on about renewable you have a point but you gotta relaise that a person can spend €500 or less and have heating for the year. Thats the reason its kept up because its cheaper. By the way the turf at the bottom of some bog (10-15ft down) can rival coal.. This guy is cutting off the top layers ans these type don't tend to be as good unless they are in a low bog...

@balmesh12 жыл бұрын
The turf is burnt for heat. It's cheaper than coal and there's very little coal in Ireland, anyway. Double wheels stop the tractor from sinking out of sight - that surely is obvious?

So 'turf' is peat? In Australia turf is grass.
