Real good basics for the new turkey hunter! I’m experienced and still enjoy reviewing the simple nuts and bolts. I’d add a coupla points. Head color is also a good indicator for sexing a spring bird. A hen’s head is typically dull gray, while a fired up male is good ol red, white, and blue! For aiming, I center my bead just above where the neck meets the body. I’ve seen some hunting partners who aimed at the noggin, got excited, and ended up shooting high and missed. If you aim at lower neck the pattern should cover for a nice clean kill. Great tips! hey man assuming you won’t even see this cause it’s been 3 years but i’m an 18 year old kid that’s been into hunting/fishing since i was little. turkey hunting is something i’ve never tried simply because my father who’s a big sportsman has never tried it. i can’t wait all year for deer season to get back into the woods so i’m getting into turkey hunting myself this spring! i’ve watched a few videos before this one and so far this has been the most helpful, thankyou for helping pass on the incredible sport of hunting to the next generation! 💪🦃

I’m hunting (anything) for the first time this year, basically because I have a 12 gauge (and spring shotgun turkey season is the closest shotgun season after I decided to pick up the hobby) and it gives me enough time to get permits,apply, research etc, turkey it is! . My advice to a new turkey hunter would be not to use a Tom decoy it has a good chance of deterring subordinate turkeys that don't want to get beat up anymore, but #1 tip you mentioned is be patient I think turkey hunting tests your will to sit more than any other hunting

I am studying poultry science at NCSU and another way that we have talked about when determining the sex of the bird is to look at the snood (nub on the head near the top of the beak). If that nub is a nub and is not drooping down, it is a hen. If it is droopy to one side or the other it is a tom.

Fantastic advice. As for decoys I've read that some hunters never use decoys. One reason is if you are hunting in the mountains there is good chance the turkey will not see the decoy anyway because of heavy brush.

Thanks for making this video man, you'd hope a lot of this was common sense, but reviewing it is always good for new and for the experienced too. Have you ever used or seen the push/pull call? When I first started turkey hunting I was about 11 and couldn't get the hang of any of the calls, my grandfather saw the push/ pull box call and it worked surprisingly well. Thanks! Check with your state wildlife agency for their legality. In Nebraska, they're illegal to use. Also be absolutely sure of your target regardless of what weapon you're using but especially with a rifle.

Good video. Going turkey hunting for the first time this year. I'll be using my grandpa's old 12 gauge. Due to my eyes, I don't think ill be able to use iron sights. I have to put scopes on pretty much everything. Any suggestions for shotgun optics?

Nice video. I'm in the Southwest portion of Idaho by the Snake River. I have have three shotguns, a 20 gauge pump, a maverick 88 12 gauge but my fave is a single shot 12 gauge H&R Topper M-48. This is the one I want to use. What load would you suggest? It kicks like a mule with magnum.

Thanks! Depends how close you can get them. I used a 28 gauge for my turkeys last year with just 2 3/4" 5s lead. Use 3" 5s lead in my 12 gauge.

You just set them up as soon as you get put where you're hunting and then take them down when you're down.
