I wanted to scream when they first began. This is a syncopated, high-energy piece and the whole lullaby beginning tanked it all before it got off the ground. Brass? Where’s the brass? Percussion? I needed to feel it. Didn’t. A marvelously under performed piece that deserved a huge kick in the ass!

Pretty soporific overall, no? Commercials used to say "a sandwich just isn't a sandwich without Miracle Whip," and this number just isn't this number without a brass section to lock in that Bacharach aesthetic. You can hear the accompanist helped pull the tempo up from the rehearsal dirge they started with, and dancers are noticeably more together from 3:00 to the end. Really missed a lot of chances to build (interlude at 2:20 and the "you-oo-ooo"s at 3:32, but really once you hit that first bridge it can just grow like a monster--growing every 16 bars, then 8, then 4). Here it just kind of flatlined, but could have been incredible with that many voices. Still good to see this number out there, and you have to give them credit for even trying. It's been 5 years now, so maybe they can do it again with a brass section! :) :) :)
