REPORTERS : In 1915, during World War I, the Ottoman Empire ordered the extermination of the Armenian people. One and a half million were killed in the first genocide of the 20th century. But up to 200,000 women and children survived, converting to Islam and being integrated into the Kurdish and Turkish communities. Today, their descendants are discovering their Armenian roots that had lain hidden for generations. Our reporters followed them on their difficult search for identity.

Keith Aryan What you dont understand is that being Turks doesnt mea that your ancestors lived somewhere in asia. Turks are like arabs, there are many types of Turks. They where spread around Asia mainly in Turkistan, not Mongolia. But there are also Turks that live in Mongolia and are related to them. There are also Turks that lived in Persian lands. Turks from Turkey came from Perisa, thats why we have common roots with them. But calling us Turkified is a big mistake, if we would be turkified we wouldnt have even 1% Turkish dna. But most of the Turks have mixed dna with larger asian dna

what a brave gesture for the descendants of forcibly converted Armenians to convert back to their ancestors' religion! Also how brave of those Kurds to face up to their participation in the genocide, and seek to make amends. @kA :- Sir,...Madam,... ... Excuse me but I am a New Zealand citizen of Greek [7/8ths] and Armenian [1/8th] background - I have lived in New Zealand since 1962 - what do you mean by including Aotearoa - New Zealand -among nations where Genocides occurred. Certainly there was warfare between the indigenous Maori and the predominantly Anglo -Celtic settlers but genocide ? There was one very evil incident - this was Parihaka... - Raping ,killing ,looting ,and destruction of houses occurred . But there is no evidence of a systematic mass killing throughout New Zealand of ALL or even of most Maori people. Certainly Australia -yes but not New Zealand . What occurred during the Osmanli [Ottoman] period and especially in the 1890's and from 1915 on till the 1920's in what is now Turkey can be categorized as Genocide - where as many as possible of the Armenians were systematically [it was organized ] rounded up to be removed to the Concentration - death camps of the Mesopotamian desert . Many hundreds of thousands [up to perhaps 1.5 million ] were murdered . Check out 5.57 in the video above ... only one of thousands of photographs of the killing of Armenians [ & Greeks and Assyrians ] ... yet Nationalist Turks and the Turkish government itself still denies that there ever was an ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ...I SAY THERE WAS ...plus the systematic killing of hundreds of thousands of Anatolian Greeks and slightly further afield of hundreds of thousands of indigenous Assyrians too . Yes there in Anatolia - GENOCIDE occurred. As for the other genocides all around the world - I do not deny that GENOCIDE occurred in Africa , North and South America [Argentina in the Pampas for example ] and Australia by western individuals /organized entities - IT DID- I only dispute an attempt at genocide in New Zealand . This comment section is pathetic. Instead of reckoning with incovenient historical truths, many people (either of Turkish ethnicity or sympathetic to Turkey, I am guessing) simply try to sidestep altogether the issue by means of lazy whataboutism. Yes, the French pursued a long period of brutal colonialism throughout the world, and tragically, many genocides have occurred throughout history. But to suggest that that excuses or even exonerates the genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire against Christian minorities in the final years of WWI is fallacious and preposterous. We all need to face historical truths head on.

The Greeks suffered the same faith, 350-500 000 Pontic Greeks were slaughtered in the Coastal Kingdom of Pontus with Trabzon as its capital. F. C. Dear Sir/Madame, please learn first how to think. Think on your own and research in your own. There is nothing more disturbing than someone who wishes to not think independently. Please see the records from the Frencn , English, German etc... embassies. Please see the records of the newspapers that were printed at the time. Look into the origin of the names of your cities, Trabzon, Izmir, Istanbul all Greek origin. Please also visit these places and ask the people what they speak . Ask them about the stories that their grandfathers told them. Again first learn how to think on your own. Then ask for DNA tests with the local populations and you will see that they are a mixe of balkan blood and not Asian in totality. Again learn first how to think.

F. C. We are drifting of course. The issue was if there were massacres of Greeks and if the Kingdom of Pontus existed. Well go into the archives of the Turkish Republic and you will see traces of this although Erdogan ordered all relevant archives to be burned. You can even see the archives of other countries that were not allied with the west. You have nothing to be afraid of if you only seek the truth. However the media in Turkey is not free, as we have seen in recent years(Turkey is the number one country in the world with the most journalists in prison). How is this relevant. Turkey does not want to even discuss the subject. Some brave journalists do ( Orhan Pamluk) now exiled because of his views and well we know what happened to Mr.Dink. If the climat in Turkey as more favorable to free speech and academia, (it is slowly getting better) you would see at least a debate of history. You might be right about the Kingdom of Pontus, but why cannot this even be discussed in Turkey? This leads to fanaticism and it is a shame that we see Turkey drifting this way especially since they want to join the EU. Why this climat in Turkey , why are minorities afraid to speak? Maybe it is because we see Erdogan close associates talk about war and other things. Why does Erdogan keep close ties with the Grey Wolves, who have bragged about the atrocities that were committed. Unfortunately this is how it is for Turkey, but the more they push back the more people will resist, except if they take other measures, like they do in Diyarbakir.

F. C. Well you have just proven my point, it is very hard to talk to irrational fanatic people. You do not want to discuss or look at the facts. Of course there were massacres of Turks by Greeks , but there was no systematic plan to kill all muslims in Greece. In the Ottoman empire there was a systematic policy to ethnically cleanse all Christians from Anatolia, Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians. Of course do ot believe me, just do your objective research and tou will see. I have to let you go now, I am reading about the Greek genocide on the website of the International Center for Genocide Studies in Israel.

And I am from Rize and lived in Trabzon for 4 years. My grandmother was Laz and she considered herself Turkish first. My father has friends which can speak full Pontic but they still openly say they are Turks first and most of them are Muslims. Adam Jones Actually, Armenians and Russians wanted to parcel out Eastern Anatolia and collaborated in a widespread invasion but I doubt Russians would share their booty with anyone. The true reason for Russian withdrawal was the Bolshevik revolution halfway thru the invasion. At that juncture, both Russians and Turks were fighting against Britain and they've decided not to aid the enemy by weakening one another. Turks quickly filled in the vacuum and Armenians had to fled with Russians knowing well their treason would be punished. Of nearly 900,000 Armenians counted (Ottoman, British and Armenian Church concurs with this number) in the region, 350,000 escaped to Russia. another 300,000 ended up in Europe and the rest to Latin America and USA. Of approximately 60,000 relocated to Syria 12,000 died in harsh Spring conditions, epidemics and lack of medicine and doctors in war torn Ottoman Empire. Hardly the 2 million they keep claiming as killed by the Turks. Even if it was true it would have been a deserved one considering the atrocities they have laid on their poor muslim neighbors for a land grab. Armenians have no one but to blame themselves for being greedy and in the end they've got what they've asked for.

Moreover, there is a big difference: Algeria and Rwanda were crime by France but this happened like 70 years ago. In TODAY'S Turkey Armenians are still killed for being Armenians like the journalist Hrant Dink in 2007 and Armenians - just like ALL other non-Turki ethnic groups within Turkey - still have no ethnical freedoms, may not name their geographical locations in a different way, may not spread their religion, may not teach their languages in primary schools etc. - they have NO autonomy like in countless other countries around the world the ethnical minorities are enjoying it, including the Germans in the West of France or Austrians in the North of Italy.

Kurds and Armenians have lived together for thousands of years. They are integrated. However due to Islam, Islam came a threatened everyone’s life. Zoroastrianism was not accepted in Islam unlike Christianity. So Kurds who were all Zoroastrians were massacred and were forced into Islam. Where as Christian Armenains were highly taxed but were not killed. Some Zoroastrian Kurds continued on as Alevi (non-Muslim) and some became Sunni. Later Ottomans displayed only Muslim politics. Which killed all Armenians using the Islamified Sunni Kurds. Later in 1970s Kurdish Alevis were also massacred across Turkey.

French propaganda is funny. Pertaining the Kurds are the tolerant peace loving neighbours like they weren’t the people who carried out the executions. This is a colonial push for diving eastern Turkiye to independent Kurdistan and Greater Armenia. All love to Kurdish and Armenian people but this isn’t going to happen. Both are welcome to live in Turkiye as brothers and citizens but this is the Turkish Republic now. Every citizen is equal as a Turk.

Suppose that so-called "Armenian genocide" is true.So, why did Armenia not accept Turkey's proposal to open their archives in which they offer to set up a joint commission of historians to investigate and publish their conclusions?Why Armenia didn't accept it?Isn't it strange or suspicious?

is there a point to debate whether the sky is blue, you know it, the world knows it, and the armenians experienced it, you open your archives and you will be convinced, the longer your people drag this dark page of your history the bigger the payoff is going to be to the armenian people, justice is always served, and the criminals are always punished sooner or later, this is karma

eb Ka what sort of evidence are you expecting? The genocide occurred, and I believe the both should move on, how do you think the Armenians who lost their grandfathers in the massacre would feel when you say it hasn’t happened, if Turkey acknowledged that and recognized it, the issue would have been resolved by now. I don’t think Armenians and Turks should be enemies due to the events of 100 years ago, but for sure respect is expected from both sides

@Kalimdor199Menegroth

@eb Ka The genocide of Armenians is a historical fact that has a consensus among international historians. What is unknown yet is the number of people killed. The report provided in 1916 by Arnold J. Toynbee records the number of Armenians killed at 600.000. But this accounts only for the first year of the genocide. According to documents that once belonged to Talaat Pasha, more than 970,000 Ottoman Armenians disappeared from official population records from 1915 through 1916. This means that these people were either killed, or fled due to the genocide happening in this period. From the same Talaat Pasha we know that the number of Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire before 1915 stood at 1,256,000, but in a footnote provided by him, we also know that the Armenian population was undercounted by thirty percent. This means that the number of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire back then was around 1.6-1-7 million people. Even this figure does not take into the account the Armenian Protestant community of several hundred thousand people. Just 2 years later, in 1917, there were only 284,157 left in Ottoman Armenia. So it is open for debate. How many Armenians died in the genocide? We don't know. As low as 600.000, although doubtful as we know that this figure accounts on the first year of the genocide. The genocide spanned several years. As high as 1.5 million, considering the fact that less than 300.000 Armenians were left alive in 1917. Another 60 to 90.000 Armenian civilians (excluding military casualties) died during the 1920 Armenian-Turkish war. What is for certain and uncontested is that there was an Armenian genocide. And we know this from Turkish officials during that time too: istorian Ahmet Refik (Altınay) wrote in 1919: "The Unionists (Committee of Union and Progress) wanted to remove the problem of Vilâyât-ı Sitte by annihilating Armenians." (Ahmet Refik (transcribed by Hamide Koyukan), Kafkas Yolunda İki Komite İki Kıtal, Ankara, Kebikeç Yayınları, 1994, ISBN 975-7981-00-1, p. 27.) Turkish novelist Halide Edip, who was openly critical of the decisions made by the Ottoman government towards the Armenians, wrote in Vakit on 21 October 1918: "We slaughtered the innocent Armenian population...We tried to extinguish the Armenians through methods that belong to the medieval times". (Insel, Ahmet (February 2009). "'This Conduct Was a Crime Against Humanity': An Evaluation of the Initiative to Apologize to the Armenians". Birikim. Retrieved 10 June 2017. "Eye Witnesses Tell The Story". Greek America. Cosmos Communications Group. 4 (1-7): 36. 1998.) Abdülmecid II, the last Caliph of Islam of the Ottoman Dynasty, said of the policy: "I refer to those awful massacres. They are the greatest stain that has ever disgraced our nation and race. They were entirely the work of Talat and Enver." (Najmuddin; Najmuddin, Dilshad; Shahzad (2006). Armenia: A Resume with Notes on Seth's Armenians in India. Trafford Publishing. ISBN 1-4669-5461-2.) Senator Ahmet Rıza stated: "Let's face it, we Turks savagely killed off the Armenians." (Fisk, Robert (2008). The age of the warrior selected essays. New York: Nation Books. p. 57. ISBN 978-0-7867-3180-0. Rettman, Andrew (22 December 2011). "Franco-Turkish relations hit new low on genocide bill". EUobserver. Jerjian, George (2003). The truth will set us free: Armenians and Turks reconciled. GJ Communication. p. 46. ISBN 9780954459901.) Grand Vizier Damad Ferid Pasha, speaking about the Armenians in The New York Times (26 June 1919), said: "The whole civilised world was shocked by the recital of the crimes alleged to have been committed by the Turks. It is far from my thought to cast a veil over these misdeeds, which are such as to make the conscience of mankind shudder with horror for ever; still less will I endeavour to minimise the degree of guilt of the actors in the great drama. The aim which I have set myself is that of showing to the world with proofs in my hand, who are the truly responsible authors of these terrible crimes." ("Allies Reject Turkey's Plea" (PDF). The New York Times. 26 June 1919) Interior Minister Ali Kemal Bey wrote in Alemdar on 18 July 1919: "Don't let us try to throw the blame on the Armenians; we must not flatter ourselves that the world is filled with idiots. We have plundered the possessions of the men whom we deported and massacred; we have sanctioned theft in our Chamber and our Senate." (Najmuddin; Najmuddin, Dilshad; Shahzad (2006). Armenia: A Resume with Notes on Seth's Armenians in India. Trafford Publishing. ISBN 1-4669-5461-2.) Even Mustafa Kemal Ataturk acknowledge the genocides that happened during the period by saying ""... millions of our Christian subjects who were ruthlessly driven en masse from their homes and massacred" ("Kemal Promises More Hangings of Political Antagonists in Turkey". Los Angeles Examiner. 1 August 1926. Archived from the original on 11 April 2015.)

@Mack Elmais There was a war when the Holocaust happened as well. So what is your point? Just because it was a war, that means it is ok to engage in killing millions of people? Why is Germany not saying that it doesn't recognize the Holocaust because it was war? If this is a valid excuse for you?
