My 20 gauge 301t with factory choke at 35 yards.. Apex 9’s had 470 hits and Federal 9’s had 338 hits inside a 12” box. Apex threw a tighter pattern, Federal was a more open “hunting” pattern IMO

I wanted to try the apex but they are super hard to find around where I live! But thanks for the input if I can get my hands on a box I’ll definitely try them.

@@therush585 I bought 3 boxes of Apex and 4 boxes of Federal when back in January. The Apex is good, but if you’re a 10-40 yard shooter, Federal is all you need. Apex would probably be better for 50-60 yard shots, if you were comfortable killing turkeys that far.

Also they will do custom loads of you wanted something not offered standard. Burgess creek you can order 1 shell of different sizes if you wanted see what each one does you don’t have to buy 5

Those are great guns, however, the factory chokes they come with are hit or miss. That one doesn't look like one of the better ones. Change chokes out to a good brand choke and you'll be amazed at the difference.

The pattern is only one part of the equation. Will the pellets penetrate the bird. I know a 12 gage tss number 9 will.

I have the Steven's 301 20 look into the Indian creek choke in a 555 and get some apex gt 20 #9 you will not be disappointed federal tss to apex ammo there is no comparison apex blows it out of the water

I didnt like the 40 yd pattern...especially if you want to kill a turkey. I did not see enough holes in the imaginary kill zone. Maybe a splatter target would show a better kill zone pattern.

I don't get a shotgun supposedly designed around a shot shell, here being the Federal TSS. I've got great patterns from a 12 gauge full choke single shot using MUCH cheaper regular and 3" shells. But to each his own.

The bigger question is: Do you hunt turkeys? If your answer is NO, then this gun probably doesn't make sense for you. In essence, this is a turkey sniper with a picatinny rail and tss (tungsten) to shoot out 40+ yards with this set up, and even longer with a right choke.

​@@therush585 Consider taking a look at a Patternmaster code black turkey. I watched a bird drop stone dead at 62 yards from longbeard XR #5 out a 20 gauge with that choke twisted in. Good luck this spring.

Bought the same gun but I'm not paying 10 a shot, I bought some browning 5 shot turkey loads and shoots real well at 40 to 50 yards

I know the guns were built for federal tss but if you were going to shoot long range Rogue offers 1/4 oz more shot than federal does. Also a different choke may help. Some people say the factory chokes on those guns are hit and miss. Haven’t shot one yet so I don’t know

I’ll have to check into the rogue. Really in most cases where I hunt a 50 yard shot isn’t an option most of the time.So I think the factory choke will do fine in my case. I would definitely think you could swap some stuff up and get a tighter pattern and further range though!!

@@therush585 well while the new long range shooting and tss makes people better killers, you keep em 40 or less and that makes better hunters. I shoot some tss but haven’t killed one over 30 yards in a long time

Rouge, Apex, Burgess creek ammo, Foxtrot, Tungsten Super Slam tss, nitro company, Hevi-18 all offer great tss loads that would be lights out 50 and under. In saying that most shots average around 30 in my experience and I try not to shoot past 45 bc wounding a bird is worse than missing or trying him again another day.

I bought one of these put a SumToy mount, Burris FF3 and bought some chokes. Had either Indian creek or Jebs and apex 9s 60 is a kill shot. Not saying shoot that far just that the pattern is there for a kill shot

It’s not really just the head hits at that range it’s wings legs etc. put an aftermarket tube like comp-n-choke and it’ll tighten that 40 pattern nice.
