Talk about a bolt of lightning!!! I, too, always use a Turkish Cast-On, but just doing Y/O then knit thru the back loop?? GENIUS!!! No going back, now, this is my ONLY way of starting toe-ups from now on! Life it too short for M1L and M1R!!! BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Thank you, Cristi!!

Great! Couldn’t be easier, esp the yarn-over knit-through the back loop increases! With kfb or M1R and L, I was always forgetting whether I was on the plain or increase round. Now there are just two rules,: If the second stitch is is a yarn-over, knit it through the back loop. If the second stitch in is not a yarn-over, make a yarn-over! No more straining to see tiny stitches or counting to figure out where I am! Plus, it looks great! Thanks so much.

Wow! I am so happy to learn about this method. I find the Judy's Magic Cast On to just be too fiddly for me, but I think I can do this. Also, thank you for the tip about starting a sock at the beginning of a color; and also for your increase method, YO, then knitting in the back loop.

This is fantastic. I know it's a very old video now (it's March 2022) but I love it. It came up in my feed and i'm so glad it did. I love the Turkish cast on and i've never seen the yo increases so i'm going to do that now. You're the only knitter i've come across who knits like me, ie yarn feed finger right next to the left needle in continental ( Norwegian) style. I find it the best way to knit ergonomically and for speed and a good tension.

Very good tutorial. Turkish CO for socks is the easiest, quickest, less bothersome one I'm found and used to date. I've tried all of the "popular" ones. None are better or quicker. The yo increases work so well too. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. You are one fast knitter BTW.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I completely agree that the Turkish CO is the best and the easiest of all the I've tried. I doubt I'll ever use another technique when this one works so very well. :o) And, lol, I never really thought of myself as a fast knitter. I just knit at Cristi speed. :o)

Excellent video. I like that you use actual sock yarn and needles. Too many sock toe tutorials use big yarn and needles, which are easier to see but don't realistically depict actual sock knitting. Yes, the needles and yarn are tiny, but that's how you get wearable socks! I have been doing YO increases for a while now, they're the best ones for increasing every round, which you need to do, initially, if you want a rounded toe. One refinement: I like to remount the yarn over at the end of the needle so that I can knit it twisted through the front loop. Very subtle difference though, you'd have to look really closely to see it, and who looks that closely at sock toes, except geeks like me? ; )

LOL! I'm a sock geek too! :o) Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I agree that it's nice to see tutorials using the intended weight of yarn. I'd like to say that I planned it so that folks could see what it would really look like in the wild, but the fact of the matter is that I was lazy and so just used the sock I was working on at the moment. :o)

@phierle
@phierle 3 жыл бұрын
You could try an afterthought heel : no need to turn the heel, you can knit the tube of the sock straight on until the cuff and then come back to the heel at the end. So you can knit it in a different colour for a nice contrast, and when the heel gets worn it's easy to replace it ! kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4qVYXqkftumoZo

I GOT IT! YAAAY! Thank you so much for simplifying this. I LOVE making socks and actually use several different methods: Tunisian crochet AND knit in the same sock, or straight out Tunisian crochet or plain knit and purl, or various crochet stitches. Can you tell I like variety? I discovered the Turkish method and found it so incredibly easy to make socks that I made 50 pairs autumn-to-winter about 2 years ago. I started with Cuff down but have wanted to learn Toe up. Don’t know why I kept running into problems.

OMG! You. Are. A. Knitting. Rock. Star! Excellent video. Paced well. No babbling. VERY nice voice to listen to And, I now have three rows on my needles. AND. And...I am doing TAAT (because I have horrible SSS). It wasn't difficult at all to do! Less fiddly than the cast on for Magic Loop. No tears! No ripping out and starting over umpteenth times! And I've always wondered what the best increase was for socks...all my friends have their favorites. I like M1L/R, but I, like others that have posted, get lost in which way to go, I lose count of stitches. Awesome sauce. Well done! And I've save the video because, well, I forget between pairs. Great technique! 👌🏻 So simpel and still very beautiful! Just started my socks like this 😃 the video could have been just a little bit slower for easier following but I just rewinded a few times and then it was fine. Thank you!

Ohmygouda.....talk about a bolt of lightning....I always use a Turkish cast-on, but this was AMAZING. (and I can't get over how you tension your yarn. I am a right hand thrower and that just blew me away. Geez, maybe I can teach this old dog a new trick or two. Thanks SO much....and I love your style......:)

I'm so glad that it helped you! I remember being a new sock knitter and really appreciating when a wiser sock knitter let me in on a tip and trick. :o) Yes, I do have a video up teaching how to do the afterthought heel. I posted it right around the same time I did this video. You can find it by clicking on my channel and then clicking on the videos tab. :o)
