I can’t consider this protection training nor do I think Kangals should be trained to protect. Their guarding instincts are 5000 years old. This was playtime for this big guy. Look how he breaks his focus on the‘assailant’ whose scent he clearly recognizes. If he thought the threat was viable, he would not break off . The handler had to coerce him to stay focused on the task because the dog knew from all kinds of cues including the handlers body language that there was no threat.

Totally agree. I have a Mastin Español mix who I have extremely socialized. He's always off leash and because of it, and his socialization in general, he's very confident and balanced. He's great with people (especially kids) and animals. Still, he is always on guard as it's in his nature. He will act appropriately if he notices something suspicious. Meaning he'll warn if that suffices but if need be he'd take more severe measures but only in case of actual danger. Again, proportionally. He's prevented theft, break-ins and protected me, and other dogs simply by warning, all without any protection training or whatsoever. Imo this kind of "protection work" is completely unnecessary, actually counter-productive, and potentially very dangerous. There's a reason schutzhund training starts with obedience and only if the dog passes the obedience tests it can start protection work. That's simply something LSG's aren't bred for as they're much more independent.

I hate to be the mom in the comments but this is a bad idea. This dog isn't meant for this type of thing, and you two are doing it wrong. Don't train them for this sort of thing, get a Malinois, Dutch or German Shepherd. These majestic beasts are not meant for "protection" work. With that being said, that's a nice-looking pup, you should get him doing work that will enrich his life. Don't do things to agitate him like that. They are super smart dogs and are prone to make their own decision. All this is going to do is make him more likely to maul someone in some Adidas trainers. Also if he was looking to harm that guy, he would have. He was just doing what he does best and barking at the dude for being suspect. Those tight pants are a dead giveaway. LOL

@John Wachowski, excellent post. I was thinking the same thing while watching this video. This type of training could easily end in disaster later. Kangal is not a personal protection dog but it has evolved as Sheep Dog. It looks not much interested in the attacker but instinctly looking around in a typical Kangal fashion as these dogs have to consistently look around for predators. Secondly Kangal is not a dog that will blindly follow your order like GS or malinois as these dogs are independent thinkers. These dogs analyze the dangers and make decisions on their own. So every dog breed has a specific mentality and to train every dog in a single fashion may not be a good idea.

This testing is completely wrong, before you start any form of k9 sercurity, protection, police or military training the dog has to undergo a temperament test, I'd be very interested in seeing how he does, I'm not saying he isn't capable of the training but having someone come up to your dog in that manner he will react in some way. Please research properly before attempting this work it's dangerous, look for a professional to help, if that's the standard your putting the bar to before high level obedience training someone is going to get killed and kangals are amazing, we don't want to add them to the banned list because someone got killed by a poorly trained dog.
