The so-called 'Turkish Well' was built according to the plans of the master builder Domenico dell' Aglio between 1554 and September 1558 for 4846 guilders, 2 shillings and 18 pfennigs in order to secure the water supply on the Graz Schlossberg. The Styrian Estates, who commissioned the well, whose shaft was to reach the groundwater of the Mur, at the end of 1553, called it the "Deep Well". The name 'Turkish Fountain' dates back to the 19th century, when, based on a legend circulating at the time, it was assumed that the excavation work between 1554 and 1556 had been carried out by 'Turkish' prisoners of war. The fountain was originally called the "Deep Well" because it was necessary to dig about 88 meters deep before water was found. 150 years later, digging had to continue to a depth of 94 metres because the groundwater level had dropped.
