The whole "City needed a striker to win the UCL" narrative is so tiresome. Before the start of the 21/22 campaign, lots of people put Liverpool favourites to win the league and everyone was saying how "City need a striker". City not only went on to win the league, they also scored the most goals out of all teams in the Top5 leagues! And then when they lost that _one_ game in the season, everyone immediately goes: "Ha! Told you!" They literally scored 5 goals against Real Madrid - 2 goals in like the opening 10 minutes of the tie and people _really_ want to argue their problem was scoring goals? Really? So a team's plan for advancing to the UCL Final should be to score 10 goals past Real Madrid or what? City also had the chance to score 6 against Bayern the other night. But they didn't, didn't have to and shouldn't need to. City had the third smallest squad in all of Europe last season with only 17 outfield players. They had a very long and tough previous season (winning League and League Cup double and making UCL Finals) and a gruelling title race in the league that went down to the wire. They were absolutely gassed and had lots of injury issues - some players even playing through serious injuries that needed surgery and months of recovery afterwards. And that's why they lost against Madrid. Their squad was too small, tired and over exhausted. That's how Kyle Walker got injured. And that's why they didn't have a replacement for him other than 38yo midfielder Fernandinho. And that's why they lost. Real Madrid didn't score _a single goal_ while Walker was on the pitch. If Walker would have just stayed fit until the end of that tie, they would have been through. But problems accumulate towards the end of the season when you have a small squad. It is what it is.

Which would be understandable as they’ve massively overpriced him atm. By pulling out all the onus is on City to pay up and even they probably won’t splash £150m + and will quickly move into other targets, leaving a clear pathway for Liverpool at a more reasonable price. I’m an Arsenal fan, I do think Grizz overstated his certainty on the Jude deal, but I also think he has a reliable source and this news doesn’t negate that. Reliable journos are used as tools in transfer negotiations all the time. Ornstein has done the same for Arsenal in the past. Fabrizio for Chelsea etc.

Hypothetically they could choose to not sell him, bench him, and let him leave for free after his contract. Not saying that will happen obviously, but your scenario makes no sense. If they lower the price, clearly City/Madrid would still be interested. The thing is, why would they lower the price? Even if it’s 100m, how much do you think Liverpool have to spend?
