Outstanding! Need to make about 7 ring holders for daughters and granddaughters. Have done a couple of dish types but I really like this one, will do a couple of those for sure.

Those are fun to make, Ray. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Wear a Mask (the traditional end-of-year greeting for pandemic years).

and now the wife wants one, and I'd love to give it a try. I love the the 2 different woods, im thinking olive wood and blood red eucalyptus. I bet that would be nice

Both the video and the project are very nice. Question: Have you considered turning the tip separately from the shaft? Your method allows both parts to be turned together, which makes keeping them in proportion easier. Turning the two parts separately would seem to offer several advantages. First: You wouldn't have to be so careful with the glue joint. (The tip just needs to be glued sufficient so it doesn't fall off, not so securely that the joint is strong enough to allow the tip to be turned.) This might permit more flexibility in design option for the end of the shaft. For example, you could partially hollow the end of the shaft, allowing the lip of the shaft to enclose the base of the tip -- like the petals of an opening flower bud. Second, if you're making several of these gluing each blank up wouldn't seem as efficient as turning several bases and then turning several tips. You could then match each finished base with the finished tip that looks best with it. I've seen this approach with birdhouse ornaments. What are your thoughts?

I have tried turning the small decoration separately on other projects, but I never got very good results. But you certainly make a good point about making a more ornate top to the main piece to put the tip into. I'll have to try that out. Thanks for your comments, David!

What a beautiful piece. I have a request about the recipe for your finish. Can you be more specific about the content, amounts and type of shellac ect. I loved the finish as it really displayed the work. Thanks

+Dr. Timothy M. Kelly, DMD, PA Thank you, Timothy. I've made several videos on friction polish, where I explain how to make the polish and how to use it. Here are links to the videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nICnqayfoLmlfKM kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn-WiYJvZs6Fq68

Beautiful. The ratios for your friction polish, were equal part???

This batch I think I was using 1:3:3 alcohol, shellac, blo. If the mixture seems to get too thick, I pour in a little more alcohol. Whenever I mix up a new batch, I can't remember exactly what I used before. I used to only use alcohol and shellac, and only recently started using the boiled linseed oil. With the shellac only mixture, I got good results. With the oil added, I get great results. I used to put on a coat of carnauba wax after the shellac finish, but I've stopped doing that now.

What is your formula for the polish?
@RickTurnsWoodturning

Hi, Charles. I use a 1:1:1 mix of shellac, boiled linseed oil, and denatured alcohol. Here’s a link to a video I did on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nICnqayfoLmlfKM

I just turned your other ring holder in cherry. Three coats of friction polish was not enough. At what speed did you turn this project? I am a relatively new turner and struggling with turning speed
@RickTurnsWoodturning
@RickTurnsWoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
I usually apply friction polish at around 2000rpm, but it actually doesn't matter too much. You can get good results at low speed as well. How much did you sand? You should go to at least 400 grit. That could be it. If the wood is wet (fresh, green), it also won't take a good shine. Did you get all three ingredients in the polish at the same amounts? You need 1 part boiled linseed oil, 1 part shellac, and 1 part denatured alcohol.

RickTurns I sand to 500 grit. I applied five coats as you suggested to a maple lidded box last night. Portions of the project looked great and other portions were dull. I sanded extensively.

Was it green wood, Ray? Or perhaps punky?

RickTurns I did not think so . It had a number of worm holes otherwise I think it had been in the woodshed over a year.
@RickTurnsWoodturning

It sounds like the wood has some soft spots, or spots that are sucking in the finish, preventing it from keeping a surface film. You could try putting some straight shellac on the dull spots, letting it dry, then reapplying the friction polish. Maybe that would work.

Too much warp speed, Rick it sounds like your lathe is falling apart. The project was well done and I am going to make some for Christmas presents. I should get plenty of hugs from the ladies. LOL
