I used to do this 18 years ago! In terms of eye-to-eye interviews, a la the Interrotron, it was effective for a while -- too effective, because it became ubiquitous, on virtually all high end commercials in the early 2000s. It originated with Errol Morris who used it for over 30 years in his films, and about 500 commercials in that era. He's finally broken free from it; had to, because everyone was using it.

Awesome video - I just grabbed a LunaDisplay adaptor to use the ipad (FLIPPED) as a second screen for a teleprompter which works really well too. Connected to mac over USBC there's no-delay and charges the ipad at the same time. Works alot better than Mac's SideCar feature. Love the idea of using a video monitor that supports flipping the image too though - always appreciate your videos ✌️

Hey Caleb, great video. We used to do this a few years back to allow television presenters to watch themselves, or the transmission when doing live links or not in need of the prompter. It's a great tool to have in the bag, but one thing I would be aware of is ghosting on the recorded image. Often times when full blue or bright white would cross the monitor/prompter this would lift and shift the blacks of the recorded image. To combat this reducing the prompter monitor brightness will help but not completely eradicate this. Best of luck with it.

Lilliput A8 was discontinued so I went with the A11 which works great. I did have to adjust the camera because it was very dark during recording which was unexpected since I have never used a teleprompter before. I'm using the Sony a6400 and Sigma 16mm so I changed the F-Stop to 2.5 from 3.2. Getting the SD card and the continuous battery are both issues with the Glide Gear camera mount. It will attach but you'll need to take it off each time to gain access to the SD card. Previously I didn't need to move anything to remove my SD card. I have since recorded directly to OBS as a workaround and am testing out different quick releases. This video is the reason I purchased both products. Very happy with the decision.

Using the ATEM mini series of switchers I wonder if you can walk us through setting this up as follows: The monitor is on a switcher that allows switching between: a) A zoom interviewee or skype interviewee for conversations looking in someone's eye. b) The camera feed to look the audience in the eye and see what they see. c) A laptop text or media to read articles and look at the audience at the same time. It would also be good to show this with a separate ATEM mini extreme so the monitor could show what the viewer sees overall with titles and the like added.

I conduct live training over Zoom using several cameras and a laptop through an Atem Mini Pro switcher. I currently use an iPad mini on the teleprompter. My plan is to put a camera monitor on the teleprompter, as you do. I will then connect the monitor to my laptop (for the Zoom feed) and my iPad (for the teleprompter feed) via a single HDMI cable routed through a 2 to 1 HDMI switch on my desktop. A sweet alternative to using a monitor is to use your iPad in sidecar mode - then routing the camera's feed into the Mac via a capture card, atem mini etc. Then, using a simple app like 'quick camera' displaying said 'webcam' on the iPad screen. Quick Camera also lets you flip the webcam feed. Of course the monitor is going to have extra features your iPad won't, but for those who have an iPad, a Mac and they're sidecar compatible, it's a good way to get started. Thanks Caleb :)

Very clever... especially the part about expanding your computer desktop to the teleprompter.... I hadn't thought about doing that. @Vandylizer4 жыл бұрын
I also use Prompt Smart Pro for my YT videos and was wondering the same. I'm currently using a smartphone laid out on the Glide Gear. I have an Atomos Ninja monitor I was thinking of using as well but it probably won't lay down nice and flat on the Glide Gear. Anyways my main question would be how can you easily switch between the telemprompting text and the monitor footage of yourself on screen. I think he had another video where he hooked up some kind of remote to switch feeds but can't remember how he did it.
@mortyoreilly3 жыл бұрын
@@Vandylizer you can do this by connecting the hdmi cable from your computer running Zoom through a 2-1 hdmi switch (mine’s an Orei) then to the teleprompter monitor. Then you connect your teleprompter device (mine’s an iPad) to the second switch input via hdmi cable. If using an iPad you will need a lightning or USBC to hdmi connector, depending on model (Apples make them). You can then switch between seeing the Zoom image on your monitor and seeing the teleprompter script. I use PromptSmart Pro on my iPad. Before I set this up I used another iPad as the remote. Sometimes I’d need to manually reposition the script using the up or down arrow on the remote, which was slow and frustrating especially if I was in the middle of a presentation. With the new setup I sit the iPad on my desk with the script configured so I can read it normally. I just swipe up or down to quickly reposition the script on the teleprompter monitor (the iPad is set up to duplicate the image on its screen to the monitor). The monitor on the teleprompter must have image flip function for the script to be readable via the teleprompter. Not many monitors have this function, and it does mean your Zoom image is flipped horizontally. But a major benefit is I can now just swipe my iPad on the desk and quickly reposition the script on the teleprompter. Much better than using the remote.

I love this!! I want it!! I have such a hard time looking at the camera directly bc I’m busy looking at the client on the computer monitor during zoom. I want more of this setup that’s cost affordable

Wonderful idea! How would you create this self-monitoring setup AND also roll teleprompter text over it? This is what I truly need, so I can BOTH monitor myself AND rely on a teleprompter for video and Live Streams.

Super cool video, I did a similar thing, I connected to my Sony Camera using the App on my iPad and then used my iPad teleprompter as my monitor. Great stuff 😉👍

Been doing this setup with my Desview Teleprompter! Teleprompters are great little tool to have. 😁

Great! This was a perfect additional use of a teleprompter. Wouldn't it be a trip to also key text in addition to talent image? Teleprompter and frame verify all in one!

Heads up, this is NOT a sponsored comment and I am not affiliated with the following website. If you go to opticalmirror.com/sample/ you can get a 6x6 inch sample of beam splitter glass for $15, shipping is about $10 more. The quality of the glass is extremely good. I purchased a sample from them a few years ago to build my own teleprompter, and 6x6 inches is more than sufficient for a small home studio prompter. The sample can be ordered in either 3mm or 4mm thickness (the website also offers 2mm but not as a sample,) with a ratio of either 30R/70T or 40R/60T. The R number is the percentage of light reflected, and the T number is the percentage of light that passes through. Naturally this darkens the picture similar to the effect of an ND filter. You can construct the promper box out of pretty much anything strong enough to hold the glass and it's shape. I used some thick fiber board held together by black gorilla tape. The inside should be colored black, (I used sharpie to blacken it,) with a hole through the back just big enough for the lens, and/or a piece of dark blackout fabric to drape over the camera and light from getting inside. And the glass should be tilted at a 45° angle. At that point it's just a matter of mounting it and whatever you're using for the prompter.

I tried to order from them but 70 dollars shipping to Canada is a bit rich for me.

Did you ever set up the "wild" teleprompter you mentioned in this video?

Caleb!!! You are always awesome. Yes this is a great idea. I have a teleprompter for my 7” iPad mini which will work great for this. I will try. I have been experimenting with people taking their own portraits in the studio looking at a live view screen in the tv in the background. But this will work so much better with wireless live view on the iPad app. From my experience, people taking their own portrait works fantastic for some (narcissistic) people and doesn’t work at all for some (shy) people.

DSLR Video Shooter, the A8 monitor is sold out. Do you have another that you would recommend, that would fit with the teleprompter? The A8 size is 8.9 inches. I see a 7" display version, but that seems rather small...5.94 x 3.74" is the length and width. I like how the 7" is bright, 500 cd/m2. The 10.1" display version brightness drops to 320 cd/m2! I'm trying to stay under $500.

Great video! How wide of a lens can you use with the glide gear?

You start to see the edges below 20mm.

@@markmorinii So, on a Sigma 18-35 with .71 metabones, would it most likely show?

@@bikesnbeerz I'm going to bet yes at 18mm, but I don't have that combo handy to test for ya.

@@markmorinii So a 24mm would work fine with the Glide Gear 100? Do you happen to know if the 750 (13” glass vs 8” of the one in this video) is a more optimal setup? My concern is it being too big and viewers seeing my eyes scan the text I’m reading. Cheers and appreciate all the help your channel has been to me!
@markmorinii4 жыл бұрын
@@kylekargov2749 24mm would be fine. As for the screen size, your eye tracking concern is definitely valid... I actually use my phone vertically with mine to keep the lines as tight as possible when reading. When I use my iPad, I noticed my eyes tracking. I imagine this effect would be reduced with a longer lens, but maybe Caleb can chime in.
