"Turn On Your Lovelight" was one of the longest versions of that song ever played, clocking in at almost 38 minutes. During that song an audience member (who was most likely on drugs) randomly came onto the stage and started telling the audience about the great lake. After the man's speech, the Dead played on as if nothing had happened. This man is now referred to as the unknown gleef

IMO, the Dead had good reason to keep this footage away from the public. This really was a very weak performance and would not have done their reputation any favors had it been included in the 1970 documentary. Sorry, but the GD did NOT always play fantastic sets...this is proof.

@@Macintosh-333 Mine too, but as good as 1969 was, 1970 was even more incredible. There are a few, very well-known SBD tapes from 1970, but it's such a shame that most of the TRULY AWESOME GD shows from that year are only available as AUDs. Even so, even with the lesser quality audio, I'd take 70 over 69. And dunno if you're aware of this, but the Dead themselves always said they played horribly at Woodstock and, though many latter-day revisionists say otherwise, I'm in full agreement with the band on this particular issue and will likely remain so.

yeah, so i thought the last word on the grateful dead's woodstock set was that it was lackluster and plagued with tech issues, but helll, this swings! that garcia interlude from 18:00 to 20:00 is fantastic. even that fool at the beginning was okay and kind of charmingly idiotic even, if you view it as a document of the times.

He guy at the beginning was obviously tolerated by the Dead in their do your own thing if it doesn’t hurt anyone way. In a way, he just fit in. The crew got him out of the way, but if any of us were really tripping out and found ourselves in front of the mic with the Dead going into Lovelight we probably would have sounded sound similar.

He was part of the Dead's unofficial 'Deadheads' that were very poetic and artistic in many ways. Pig pen in places sounds just as fucked up as that guy who was just on the edge of the 3rd coast with all the answers in the universe and then they slowly disappeared, but at least I've not had that happen with an audience of about 4.5 million watching me dry up ...all adds too the fun I missed out on live.

So this is the great documentarian Pennebaker! I could have filmed the band better if I was blind drunk. Can't imagine he couldn't get good stage access if some unknown person could grab the mike & yap aimlessly for much too long with nothing to say. Gets better towards 20 min mark, but nothing like the camera work on so many other bands on that helicopter day; think Sly, The Who, CSN, Airplane, damn near everyone. Maybe that's why the Dead didn't want to be included in the film release.
