Small Q&A for this video: 1) Is your wife German? NO, my wife is not German, she is Dutch. Like me. Whenever there are Dutch people in American movies they tend to speak German, but I can assure you, it's two different languages. 2) Why are there so many ads? I HAVE NO IDEA, I'm sorry if the experience is interrupted too many times.. Can't seem to change it! 3) It's SO funny that everyone is coming up with songs that have similarities with this example! Keep 'em coming!

As someone who never went to music school or took lessons in guitar, I now see how important it is to actually know the notes conposing the chords, the different positions and how to use a pick properly. I feel like such a low-level amateur watching this, I would have never understood the relations you're explaining by myself. But it does sound beautiful. Kudos to you for making this video and explaining how and why it works, now I know the void of information I have to fill in order to become a better guitarist..

You just have to know the entire fretboard..if you didnt...it would help. Learn the fretboard in C MAJOR/Amin You can use the fretboard like a SLIDE RULER to play in different keys The lesson is in D MAJOR/B min ( SLIDE EVERYTHING UP 2 frets) All the notes and chords will make sense to you..or you'll see it faster. Hear it ect Just pretend you're running your fingers across ALL the WHITE KEYS on the PIANO....but it's now tune to D MAJOR/Bmin Any combinations of those white keys will work. You'll just get different wierd chord names ...becuase it's not going every other note anymore. Keys are just pitch.... Anyways....In D MAJOR/B min....you can play any of the notes open If you study the fretboard.... notice...you can BARR across the 5th..........10th and 12 fret... In Bmin....the nuts is as if it's the 10 th fret... You can do the same thing in E minor.. The nut will be as if it's at the 5th fret. Use the same CONCEPT he's teaching...just do it in a different key.
@hanburgundy43176 жыл бұрын
I took lessons in middle school, but then did my own thing for years afterwards; I never learned music theory or what all of the chords or scales were - I just played what I felt and learned by ear. That said, after about a decade I plateaued and couldn't write anything creative anymore nor could I easily figure out other musicians' songs; after that, I started learning some basic scales and chords and how they're "supposed" to relate to one another and I've been steadily improving again. Point is, you don't need music theory to play guitar or even to make beautiful music, but it helps quite a lot and eventually you will need it if you want to keep improving or want to have a certain sound.

I’m a dad trying to learn the guitar for the last two years or so. Between poor time management and severe lack of skill, I’ve come to the conclusion I’ll never be a good guitar player. But mate, I am in awe of your musicality. You just made those three chords, the same chords I am trying to master, sound like something out of this world! You don’t have to be a good guitar player to appreciate a great one. Blessings from Oz

There are a lot of hit songs recently using compound thirds (Hold Back The River by James Bay, Youngblood by 5 Seconds of Summer, Eastside by Benny Blanco, etc...) and John Frusciante also used to use them a lot. They sound great! Favourite song that uses them is Many Of Horror by Biffy Clyro
@greeny82146 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, I have been trying to get my son to use these 3rds and now he has read your comment he is actually trying them.
@davidpowderly91176 жыл бұрын
They're actually tenths rather than compound thirds. It's a little pedantic, granted, but we never confuse a ninth with a second.(e.g. sus2 with add9).
@IttoOfficial6 жыл бұрын
@@davidpowderly9117 according to wikipedia "a major tenth (two staff positions above one octave), also called compound major third, spans one octave plus one major third". I think they are the same thing but you might be right, I'm not very knowledgeable on the music theory terminology ;)
@djpteaching54486 жыл бұрын
@@IttoOfficial No, you're correct... it's just that when the interval spans over two octaves the term 'compound' is limiting and the notion of which octave the third occurs is confused.... for instance if you call it a tenth, then it's the next octave above the lower note, but if it's a seventeenth (essentially a third in the second octave) then the compound third term is highly ambiguous. :)
