The original war scythes were quick and easy mods so a few blacksmiths could render a bunch of tools into effective weapons without working too hard each one, so you doing a home project on it is just... really appropriate for this weapon style. Historically, people didn't make this by itself. They took tools and made them better weapons as it suited them, and your tests showed that while normal scythes have several issues as weapons, this design isn't perfect, but is reasonably workable, and much easier to use in a fight than a scythe while making minimal adjustments. In this case, the difference between a good tool and a good weapon is a 90 degree angle.

Actually, a very historically accurate weapon, except maybe for the double sided blade as this was not as common. A related historical trivia: The famous Polish, Lithuanian and American General from the XVIII century, Thadeus Kosciusko, led a company of a few thousand peasant insurrects armed with agricultural scythes that were repurposed very similiarly to this one here, to serve as a makeshift spear (they were more upright and straight than this one) and a military scythe at the same time, to the battle of Raclawice, against Russian military. He won the battle, in no small part because the scythe was such an effective and scary weapon. An enormous panorama-style painting of the battle is still displayed to this day in the city of Wroclaw in Poland, along with an electronic model depicting troop movements in the battle. Very cool weapon. Those bottles will think twice next time they think about trying to be obnoxiously full of water.

I'm sure you *already* suspected this Skall, but the Reaper Scythe *can* in fact be a practical weapon, you just need to make sure that the blade's not so *strongly* curved that it throws the tip *out of line* with the rest of it; make sure to avoid *that* , and you've got a great *thrusting* weapon. Yes, I said *thrusting* weapon because as much as the motion you'd do with it would *look* like a swing, it'd result in a *stab* , which's why it'd be a *hooking thrust* . Anyways, next time you have a Reaper Scythe made for you, why not design it with its blade being shaped like I described, and see how well that works? I'm sure it'd make for a good video.

It's important to note that people generally didn't just make war scythes, they modded normal scythes into something they could reasonably fight with. The point was rendering a tool into something reasonably useable in a fight with minimal effort and cost, to find the easiest route from peasant to soldier. As Skall demonstrates, this isn't necessarily the best weapon, but if you already own a scythe, it's really damn easy to make one.

I think the idea behind the reaper scythe is that the Grim Reaper harvests souls like wheat lol. And theoretically, if the scythe was some kinda magical artefact, it should be able to penetrate armor, flesh, bone, even magical barriers and stuff like that. I remember designing a scythe in one of my stories that essentially transforms from the reaper shape, into the warscythe shape, or even more like a real spear/polearm. Now that I think about it though, a long time ago, I remember a game called Dante's Inferno, where the player character had a magical scythe as his main weapon, which could transform into various shapes, stretch and grow, et cetera. The game was like God of War, but for Xbox.

If you want to get that copper look back in some fashion you could always use a brass wire wheel to color the metal strips on the shaft (I don't remember the actual name for them). That's the best way I've seen to add color to a weapon without adding weight or compromising the durability. I don't know the exact details of the process, but you use some kind of a torch to heat the brass wheel up and then use the wheel and a drill or something to brush the color on to the desired metal surface.

In bannerlord there is a polearm that looks like that called the Rhomphalia which is a freaking beast of a weapon that i would always use. That thing would cut through people, and shatter shields with the best of them.

Ngl the war scythe looks kind of like a hockey stick. Which surprisingly is kind of cool. The Hockey Scythe of Doom.

Have you considered making a scythe sword? It's very obscure sword from history. It's basically a war scythe's blade on a sword handle. I'd be very curious to see how effective it is as a weapon. Really good video by the way.

Not sure if something like this exists, but I had an idea. Using the double edged scythe blade shown here and adding two curved hooks at the bottom of the blade. I think it would produce a solid weapon.

I’ll be honest, if I craft a scythe, I’d go with this similar design. Practical, effective, historically accurate, and can still be wickedly stylish.

The original was too curved even for truly good war pick work. The appropriate curve of a scythe is determined by the arc that it travels in use. Agricultural scythes were adjustable to match the presentation of the blade to the user for this reason. In the new configuration it's finally open enough, though it would be better if the blade was shaped to better balance the cutting stroke with the handle. That being said, that would require making an entirely new design, so it's a moot point. The modification is a drastic improvement from a functional perspective.

Adding an elongated back spike would counter balance the front and help with getting better edge alignment.

I have a homemade burlap scarecrow costume I routinely bring out for the season. I was at the Halloween store today, looking for parts for an unrelated Ghostrider/Tron thing, when I saw the scythes. Decided to check them out, aaannd a 5' plastic toy just doesn't look intimidating in the hands of a 6'4" scarecrow. This would probably work much better, but be unsafe to carry with my sight compromised lol

If only Grim reapers could be depicted with a war scythe, or perhaps have servants that possess war scythes to do the reapers work whilst he's busy harvesting souls with his harvest scythe. That would be a nice and new idea to work with.
