Straight from the packaging Marc pulls his new Turnigy 130A Watt Meter apart. Ignore the soldering apparently I am crap at it. (turn captions on to skip it), and then testing it out on the Mini Tricopter. Enjoy.

How not to solder a connection. Hope those Hobbyking workers aren't that inept. 1. Tin both parts. 2. Hold them together well. 3. Heat both parts simultaneously, with HOT iron. 4. Add enough solder to make things look pretty ... not too much. 5. Back off, you're done! 6. Do not EVER solder such things without flux-core solder. 7. NEVER touch an iron to a joint before the iron is completely HOT. 8. NEVER take more than three seconds to solder a joint. 8. Sometimes I really hate youtube!

Thanks to your video I discovered the indications at the back with respect to the auxiliary battery terminals ( + and - and U). That was what I was looking for and could not find anywhere on the web before. Thanks.

As someone who contain almost zero knowledge on rc besides the basics and common sense, I'm impressed on the energy draw and the power of that thing. wow.

Had the same soldering problem you had till I got myself a "third hand soldering stand". There are many examples on ebay. You should get one of those, helped a lot in my soldering. Great channel and great website by the way!

You made me feel pretty good about my own soldering skills. Here I thought I was the only one. Well it worked, and I guess the meter is good. Cheers.

Nice work Marc! Thankfully you didn't desolder this board, Great that you mentioned Dave Jones' channel. Dave desoldered a Turnigy charger LCD with not-so-great outcome. BTW, I was given some clear thin liquid flux by a local electronics guy and it works very well. I'll have to find out what it is...

This really did become unintentional comedy when it got to the soldering part. And XT60's are relatively easy to solder. The hilarious sequel would be trying to solder "T plug connectors" with this rig.

Yep I suck at it, and the humidity makes it even worse. I've given up on making my own SMD boards because the humidity here is always above 90%.

Maybe change title to 15 minute soldering debarcle. I'm sorry but I can't believe I sat through all that (or that you left it in).

Thanks for posting. I wanted to check out that aux battery hookup, so the watt-hours etc would be preserved when the source was switched off.. Never noticed those tiny symbols on the case! I just powered it up using an RC radio battery. :) Did you ever find out what the (pluse symbol) 3rd pin does? I wonder if it's a reset input?

Yep the soldering is boring as bat shit. That is why I put a big fat link to skip through the soldering section, turn annotations on.

Another BTW Marc. I've found XT60's not so re-usable. The buggers will melt & slide around like they really want to do your head in! HK should really think about plastic thermo issues, but I guess it's just a matter of ordering heaps more than you think you need.

You can use masking tape to hold down your hemostats so that both hands are free for solder and iron.

Hi Marc, i like your videos great idea putting the link in to skip the soldering "lesson" would you, or anyone else, know, or like to guess, as to how long one could extend the conductors to the LCD screen? Thanks.

Put the XT60 in a small vice. So much easier to do the soldering.

Hey, Do you know what RXD TXD pads are for? I use this meter to monitor PV panels and after it counts 99.999 Ah the software on this atmega8L stops working OK (shows 0 for Volts and Amps and Watts) - I hope that those pads will let me put my own program in there.
@Rchacker
@Rchacker 10 жыл бұрын
You have confirmed that it is an atmega in there?, RX and TX are the serial pins and can be used for flashing only if it has a bootloader loaded. Which I kind of doubt it does. I would suspect that internally it is holding the values fine and that its the display code that needs some work. You might find that it outputs info on the serial pins.

RCHacker yes it is atmega8L I haven't found any miso mosi sck , etc pads so I assume firmware is somehow loaded via serial

The worst soldering technique I have ever seen. Have you not heard of wetting the tip with fresh solder? Also that type of gun needs having the connections between the tip and the heating element cleaned and tightened often.

I thought it was pretty good given that I was soldering behind a camera with bolivian solder, flux pot off screen and a cheap shit soldering iron. Looks crap but it works.

5A/mm^2 - its for cuprum wire. This device is not 130A - !!!!!!!!maximum its 40A continuous current!!!!!!! 130A probably in pulse current mode.

10cm wire of 4mm² would dissipate 4.4W at 100A :-) so it won't get hot ;-)

Or their customers just need to learn how to solder! Now I know why HK only uses silicone insulated wire. With anything else the users are going to be melting away inches of it from every solder joint. This nasty video not withstanding, good soldering is not hard.
