See how I created a log bridge for my continuous mountain bike trail project at Surfs Up…in one day. I go into even more detail than normal, to hopefully inspire you to take on and create your own backyard trail vision! If only the actual process took the length of this video…
Thankfully, I had a helper for today who was able to assist when needed. Make sure that you also have someone on hand just in case! Safety first. Try not to dangle a 30-pound chainsaw precariously between your legs.

Welcome to the official KZbin Channel of Backyard Trail Builds - Detailed videos on Trail Building 🛠
Hi, my name is Seth Gebel and I grew up in Catawissa, Missouri just outside of St. Louis. I'm very fortunate to have a playground of woods to build whatever I see fit in because Missouri riders don’t get much feature time. I’d love to change that! Hopefully, someday we’ll be able to push a build-along that benefits the public here in St Louis for MTB skills progression. For now, though, I build every weekend and film for you all to watch!
➡️ On this channel, you'll find trail-building videos with music and step-by-step shots that keep you entertained and informed! Builds like road gaps, berms, jumps, drops, trail flow, skinnies, and many others!
Combining my love of mountain bikes, woodworking, and creating something from nothing, stick around to see just where my wild mind takes me next!
What started out as a passion project for building fun and exciting trails in my literal backyard, has grown into so much more. (Giant lizard bike jump, anyone?) Be sure to watch for builds, tips, and special offers each week.
If you love adventures and seeing wild and lofty ideas, come to life, subscribe to my channel for new videos every Sunday at 11 am Central! Hit that bell to never miss a video! 🔔

Admire your building. Chaps are your friends while using a chainsaw. Had many close calls, saved me a trip to the hospital countless times.

@@mosiaotunya44or whatever is left of said leg. Chainsaw cuts get really nasty really quickly. Also some cut resistant shoes are definitely recommended! They're expensive, but worth being able to walk after an incident.

We used 20' long white oak that was about 8-12" round to build a bridge over a small spring. Only had 4 guys but thankfully we pulled the logs down a hill using smaller cut up logs as rollers. Years of experience in rigging paid off, it was way easier than I thought it was going to be. Hopefully the next time we get together we can emulate some of these great builds.

I admire your knowledge of wood feature building and its always so high level. I thought of you while I was driving through southern Missouri returning from Bentonville. I'm going to make it a point to hit some trails you've built stuff on in 2023. I'd love a tour or at least a recommendation of where to begin

Shepherd Mtn in Ironton, MO (shuttle) 1.5 hr south of St Louis. The black trails both have wood features that Seth built but be ready for some proper black difficulty. Howler Bike Park , MO (shuttle) close to Branson. Ponca in Arkansas is just south of here. Steelville, MO bike park (no shuttle)

I'm glad you did a full video on this. I've ridden across this bridge (and obviously many others) without giving it a second thought. Next time I'm out there at Steelville I don't think I'll be able to passively ignore it. Sometimes you just need a nudge!

For all the kids out there aspiring to build as cool stuff as this dude, remember SAFETY FIRST. Always use chaps while working with the chainsaw and steel toe boots. Also, the decking should not be spaced apart so that your fingers could get stuck if you crash (at least that's the standard over here). I know of professional riders who got fingers broken because the gaps were too big.

should've put a slit angle to the edge logs so that water doesn't sit in the corner and deteriorate the wood by sitting there

Nice Dude, such a great build follows the last perfectly, look forward to seeing all the rest of the features you're building in this park. Wish I had such easy access to such great wood like you do, couldn't imagine life if that was possible, so many things to build. Have you ever put any of the logs aside to properly dry and then do dimensioned lumber for building "fine" furniture or the like?

You could just place the logs in position.. measure and mark them and then take them back out with the machine and the cut them with the saw in an easier position and then place them back on the bridge.

When your talking bridges, they're not footings, they are more appropriately called abutments as they abut the crossing. Also if you want a stronger bridge you place the stringers/girders across the span, then ties over the stringers/girders, then a running surface in the same direction as the stringers/girders.

Any risk of the outer support logs rotating because of the rounded bottom and the edge cut, if someone were to drive a car across or something? Otherwise looks great!
@mattgies
@mattgies Жыл бұрын
For one to rotate, either all the screws have to rip out, or the enter bridge needs to rotate along with it.

Why not keep the foundation logs uneven and just screw the boards on top so there's a bit of an uneven element to it when riding over it? Seems like some tilt would be more enjoyable than riding over a perfectly flat piece of wood. Just wondering the thought process there

Seth, please stop drawing lines on logs and eyeballing it - just use an Alaskan mill on your saw. And if your plunge cuts are all over the place then you can put a mark on your bar and keep it in view so you stay shallow. Finally, the abutments on that bridge won't last if the water takes the dirt away below them so watch out.
