How are these tools being used? In house or are you distributing your own tools now? Do you run a production of step drills, or just 1tool at a time?

i call that drill point a "split point". When machines are running, i working on a small jig, to grind a splitpoint on regular drills. Fits in a multifix toolholder for a regular lathe. just add a grinding disc to the spindle. split points are way better. For regular holes with no tolerance, you can peck a small point with slow feed, before drilling throug, instead using a spot-drill. (depending on drill size and material)
@brickandfanal73503 жыл бұрын
Indeed, split point is the name that my tool sharpener used to describe that design that allow big drill to avoid to use a pilot hole. I was mainly drilling counterbore as describe in the video, but quite large (36/54 mm). Instead of using 3 tools to do the job (pilot hole, 36 mm, 58 mm), I was able to drill those counterbores in on single pass. What a time saving!!!. Best of all, the basic standard drill was quite unexpansive. Just a few modifications from my local tool sharpener and I had the perfect tool for my application.
@realdave11203 жыл бұрын
This is not a split point, a split point drill has no radius gash like this one have. the "Split Point" is the gashing type. a split point is going straight out towards the flute.

Could you talk a little bit about why you would make custom drills and where you would use them? I don't understand why this is warranted/economical vs approaching a vendor who already makes drills and end mills and why they might not have exactly what you need already.
@P8ntbaLLA563 жыл бұрын
Typically this kind of drill is used to do the through hole and counterbore for a SHCS. No tool changes, and if using a drill press or manual mill, it makes it so so much better and faster.
@christopherbarron87303 жыл бұрын
@@P8ntbaLLA56 Ok but a socket head cap screw is a standard part, so why isn't this tool just bought from a vendor? Why would you choose to buy and run 100,000+ dollars of machinery just to make a drill that should be, and maybe already is, very standard.

Dear @Scott Leoncini, I am having some chipping problems while grinding carbide drills. The chipping occurs at the top of the drill/steady-rest contact surface. I am using V-shape steady-rests instead of half-moons. Also, before grinding the drill itself I do blank preparation on another machine. The portion from the tip to the shank of the drill is tapered slightly. From your experience, why do you think this issue might be happening? Thanks a lot in advance!!
@UrkaZerka3 жыл бұрын
Try changing the direction your spindle or approach style. Sounds like it is chattering on your steady.

It creates several steps with different diameters with one tool. A typical example would be a counterbored hole for a bolt.

Maybe? Carbide isn't very expensive when you're purchasing bar stock. Compare that to 1/2" solid drill price, it is probably cheaper (depending on brand).

I am not advanced in tool grinding just the basics. Would you use diamond wheels on this machine and what other types of grinding wheels do you use and what are they made of? All I know (I am from the UK) is, I have used diamond wheels and green wheels for grinding carbide. Just curious about the advancements in grinding wheels is if any over the years. I am not a tool grinder by trade thanks.
