Joel, a trick I do with bearings in the automotive world is to put them in the freezer. Then when you install the bearing it should be a smooth insert without the need to hammer. Then let warm to normal and it'll be snug. Awesome videos and love your work

If you just laid down a board with a single straight edge on one side then add 2 short blocks with a gap for the 45 degree piece, push your 2 cut pieces up to the two blocks and they are in instant alignment, and then glue and clamp.

My OCD is having me see only the sticker he left on the laminated piece during the first glue up.

Joel, I made some jigs out of melamine big box shelving that I use to glue up my Celtic knots. The Tite Bond glue doesn't stick to the melamine when I do the inlay. I use three clamps; 1 end to end and 1 holding each cut piece to the side of melamine faced board. I don't have any experience using CA on melamine but, it's worth a try. I'm able to glue up two blanks at a time, whether they are pepper/salt mill blanks, rolling pin blanks, boxes, or whatever.

Joel you said when you got to side 2 you reversed the blank and cut it. Then did you go back to the way you cut side 1 and do sides 3&4 the same way as side 1. Also I have read and watched other you tubes and they say you have to cut out the blank to the kerf size of your blade, but you are just putting in your 3/8" glue up in where you cut the blank Please advise I am ready with a 3" maple blank ready to go Thank you great looking rolling pin Thank you Bob

if you cut your insert piece at a 45 degree angle before gluing and then use a 1" x 2" piece of wood as a guide along the edge, you can make sure that your pieces line up perfectly and are plumb

do you know of any place that still sells these rolling pin kits? Wood Craft is a no show on the item numbers you suggested

A couple of suggestions, cut your inserts down to width & length, use a gluing jig to keep everything square, and use a full length sanding block to sand it perfectly straight.

C A blue is not reliable, it is a brittle bond! Hit the glue line hard or drop your project and it can break. Better to use a wood blue for a secure non brittle bond.

Do you make a rolling pin that's weight about 3 and a half kilos?

When you use bearings, it doesn't work well as a rolling pin. It pushes the dough in front of the pin as opposed to pressing the dough down. Professionals vs selling more expensive bearings

Get in touch with Woody Hyezmar, or at least download his free book. If you're starting out that's a way to go about it.

Beautiful wood you used, would you be so kind as give me an outlet where i can purchase the type wood you use on your pins and turnings; I live in North Alabama and will have to order such materials as I know of no dealer near by I can pickup Rosewood, purple heart Etc.

What did you use to drill the hole through the pin?
@joelgreenstudios8746
@joelgreenstudios8746 8 жыл бұрын
I bought a 1/2" very long wood bit at the local hardware store and drilled it on the lathe. First with a normal 1/2" bit, then when I could no longer go deeper I use the longer bit. In the video however, to save time I used a pre drilled blank I purchased at Woodcraft. Thank you for your question

+Joel Green Studios I always have trouble with the bit wandering and leaving an un-centered exit hole. Anyway to avoid this?
@joelgreenstudios8746
@joelgreenstudios8746 8 жыл бұрын
+Colton Carew good question. It seems to wander on me when the bit is turning. But when you drill on the lathe the project turns while the bit is stationary. When drilling I hold the drill bit shaft while wearing gloves to help stabilize it. I think you will find more control if you use that method.
