That's a beautiful ring! 20 years ago I experimented and made rings from plain steel. I gave one to my gf at the time. When we decided to get married, I asked her what she would like for a wedding ring. She said "I like this one because you made it! " Now I had the job of convincing her father that a ring made essentially from tie wire was a good enough gift for his daughter. The rings were shiny and silky smooth and I said romantic sciency things about carbon and iron during the ceremony and he seemed satisfied. We are still married and the rings have lasted for over 20 years.

I say do whatever content makes you happy, because that is what makes your videos awesome. I'm probably never going to have a pilots license, be a rocketeer, or build a canoe from scratch, but I've thoroughly enjoyed watching you do all of those things, and found them highly relatable. I have to say, I'm on an intermediate level with my lathe (ok, LOW intermediate maybe), and it is nice to see you make the rings without even using one. It's easy to fall into the trap of "I can't because I don't have this tool". You remind me that I should be thinking "I can do it, the tool just makes it easier" instead. Even owning a lathe, There's a thousand accessories and chucks that seem indispensable, but with a little thought can be worked around.
@sarowie3 жыл бұрын
I love what you did here. The ring has great contrast and the charm of both fine hand precision work, yet also "hand tight plus one turn" workmanship, that is not afraid of pragmatism to make a part fit for service.

Xyla: "Uh-oh. I think I went to far… oops… 😭" Bridegroom: "Srsly, what can't you do? This is amazing 😍" It's always like that, we makers always have a total different expectation what other people will think of our makes!

Friend: "man, this is a really nice porch! You did a fantastic job on it." Me: "Well, right here is a nail that missed. Over here is some deck boards that aren't quite even. This pillar isn't quite plum and the steps are too spongy."
@sarowie3 жыл бұрын
it kind of reminds me of Adam Savage and other markers, that call imperfections from the maker "witness marks" and respect that any item made by a human has traces of its maker and that is not a bad thing. So, even after seeing this video, the groom will look at the dark spot in the wood joint and think of it as prove of the craftmanship and uniqueness, not an imperfection.
@zeekjones13 жыл бұрын
@@sarowie As a perfectionist... This concept terrifies me. _An impossible goal... Leave no trace... A small tool scratch in the wood must be patched and repatterned!!!_ :O I swear my project output suffers greatly touching-up all the things... Or even finding motivation to start something I know will take so much mental strain.
@russwilliams47772 жыл бұрын
@@sarowie Very similar to the Japanese "wabi-sabi" concept. Objects carry traces of the natural materials they're made from, their maker, and their entire history... things that are touched will eventually be worn down by the hands that touch them, and that's not a bad thing. It just... is.
@hedgehog31802 жыл бұрын
I think that's because when you make something you see the entire process of it and how many of the steps were ugly and looked unflattering and once you finish it you see all the traces of that. But to everyone else who only sees the initial thing and then the finished product it's just like you somehow magically transformed that boring input into something amazing, and in general to everyone who only sees the finished product they never even notice all the small traces that you're aware of and know what mean, they just see the whole thing and is stunned by it. Even if they notice the trace they have absolutely no idea what it means, to them it's probably just a detail and nothing more, they have no idea that this was a thing you were trying to avoid and so on.

Coolest wedding I've ever seen!! Very nice work on the rings!! One word of advice to you and your viewers, which you probably already know as an engineer but many viewers won't know this. Many types of copper used in electrical applications contain Beryllium in their alloys, a very toxic metal. (Primarily in dust form) Unlikely used in your spark plug gasket. It is commonly found in applications in microwave ovens ceramic magnetron tube insulators (often pink in color). Not applicable in your use. But Beryllium Copper alloys and Beryllium Bronze alloys are very high strength alloys and often as strong as alloy steels of some types. These materials are non-sparking and are very strong and often used to make non- sparking tools for use in explosive environments or areas needing non-magetic tooling. As a former T&D maker working with exotic materials respirators and special handling was requited for any alloy with Beryllium, Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic and all the other usual toxic metals. Always best to be safe if not sure!! All us makers will always scrounge materials if they are free!! Part of the fun!!
