Clearing timber can feel intimidating, especially when we are talking about several acres. Watch what happens when I give it a try with a chainsaw. I get caught in a storm with close lightning and take a few falls.

I'm a professional tree faller. GET SOME CHAINSAW PANTS!!! And don't listen to garbage on your head phones. Concentrate on your job! You complained about spending $9k on your kids teeth.An accident with a chainsaw will cost a lot more in just a fraction of a second.

I've turned most of the pasture I have by clearing woods with chainsaws. Some 15 year thick cedar over growth and some virgin woods and that very first scene of you cutting a few inches up from the ground made me queezy lol The number one thing I've learned is either cut them down to the dirt the first time. If you decide to grind stumps you will miss some later and they will break an ankle (you or an animal) or catch 3 point machinery on a tractor at 10 miles per hour and that won't be good. If they are well separated like heavy forest I cut them about 3 feet up and let them rot for a couple years then push them over or break them off with a tractor. The grass will grow fine around them without branches.

After you clean the area, what is the best approach to planting a variety grasses for your animals? Any good sources to look into this?

Hey Shane, just came across your channel. Love what you’re doing and watching another person go through the same adventure I just started. I just bought 50 acres in middle TN, a Stihl 391 chainsaw and a jean jacket (we’re twinsies). The upper level of the property consists of approximately thirty acres and is heavily wooded. I am going to clear out roughly 70% of the trees to create meadows and space for orchards and pasture for wild game. The lower level has a two acre pond for fishing and swimming along with a creek that borders the property. As a city boy from SoCal turned southern farmer your videos will surely come in handy (having two chains sharpened and ready for the days work is a good idea). Best of you luck to you guys and if I learn anything that might help you I’ll send it along.

Thanks for watching! The Jean jacket is critical. Lol! Okay it’s at least, some what practical. That sounds like a really nice piece of dirt. I love that area. I lived in Clarksville for a few years back in the day. Love it out there.

Thanks for watching! That part about you picking up on me being a veteran cracked me up. I will continue to post updates on the progress over time. We are Mob grazing cattle, and rotating Cornish cross and egg layers as well. Great idea on the video. I’ll put that in the queue. Thanks for your service. Look forward to future comments.

We are doing the same thing not far from you. Those chains don't last long when cutting fresh pine. We found that if you fell the tree and let it set for about a month it dries out enough to cut it up easily.

Shane, I’m looking at buying 7 acres of forests land to transform 5 acres into an orchard. If I’m in no rush, chainsaw is the way to go? Thinking of getting a mill and move the log with ATV and those lumber trailer.
@farmershane
@farmershane 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! A good chainsaw could get you to where you need. I don’t know anything about growing trees though. I’m not sure how existing root systems will impact new trees for your orchard. An ATV and trailer should work depending on the size of the logs you are moving.

Leave your stumps high and rent a dozer, when you get your rows of forest waste, then bring that chainsaw out too work. Use a reciprocating saw to cut stump roots for an less expensive tool than chainsaw. Thanks for the video

It all depends on the growth. For me it took as much as 6 hours to clear an acre. Other areas less than an hour.

You can absolutely do it, your trees are not too big. I had giant white pines. MA250 and Garden tractor. Your nice and flat . Put down lots of lime should be good to go.

Some highlights... you tripping, you pointing up on the wrong side of the screen for the card at the top of the video, and the trees that kept getting stuck on other trees! Nice Ryan cameo in there as well.

I would recommend professional felling dogs and tank skid plate. The factory felling dogs leave a lot to desire. You would be surprised what little effort it takes to crack a tank Taking a few cuts on dry wood will clean the chain up after cutting on sap wood No one care about safety Steve. But turn the volume down. You need to hear whats going on around you, the load on the saw, what sounds the trees making and the guy behind you thats about to slit your throat
@farmershane
@farmershane 2 жыл бұрын
I couldn’t agree more. I have been disappointed that the 362 doesn’t come with beefy felling dogs. And, a skid plate would be great. I’ll have to look for a light option.

The tree stumps need removing totally.Cutting the trees with a chainsaw and leaving stumps is no good.Useless land and dangerous for animals who could injure themselves on the stumps.Pasture has to be clear of any dangers like tree stumps.
