I don't have a proper pond in my garden but I do have an upturned dustbin lid which is used regularly by lots of birds. I have to top it up quite a lot. I think your feeding station needs to be a bit closer to the shrubs for the birds to have cover, a perch between the shrub cover and the feeding station is a good idea. When the birds leave the cover they will then stop off on the perch before going to the feeders. Good luck an stick with it.

Thank you 😊 yes I will definitely be adding more perches next to the feeder soon, so the birds can hop onto those while they wait for the feeder 👍

Brilliant, I do a lot of garden bird photography too. If you get some plastic lids off drinks bottles and screw them on the back of your horizontal branch out of view of the camera you can put small amounts of feed in to draw the birds in. Also make holes in the side of branches or an upright log stuck in the ground to push peanuts in or suet. Another thing you can try is when youre sitting out to photograph birds temporarily take all the feeders down except perhaps one and then put food in the feeding pots and holes in the branches etc , that way they will search more for food where you want them.. Keep it up, great video

Well done Jo ❤ I did this about 15 years built a brush wood blind to sit in reflection pool nice branches for the birds to perch on ive all way found a bigger gap from tree to perch to feed . Looking at your lovely garden you could use the ivy stump as a focal point and just change different perches and stump weekly good luck

Great video, another idea you could try which worked for me was to have some small lengths of cut logs in a pile on the ground. Once the old wood lice get to work i see birds coming to feast & if your lucky its a good hiding place for small mammals to hide too.

Hi Jo, love watching your journey into wildlife photography... i used to drill a few holes about 3cm in diameter and 30cm apart into the top of the branch the birds would perch on to get some nice natural looking images.... you could set your camera onto a tripod and pre focus on the perch. Also you could do the same to the wooden fence posts in your garden...anyway good luck and looking forward to your next post 😊

Keep the ivy , it's good for blackbirds / redwings and thrushes, Goldcrests also like exploring Ivy for bugs ^_^ Maybe get yourself a pop-up hide ? you can position yourself comfortably then and the birds won't be too bothered about you being nearby :) One suggestion for the moss covered perch is make some small wells in the top - about the same size a tea candle , then you can put seed in them and keeps the feed out of the shot for a more "natural" image..

Great video & you’re doing a great job with the garden. My wife & I retired & moved to a beautiful place in the Cambrian Mountains not far from the Hafod Estate which we adore. Having been here now for just over a year I found my feeders have become busier & busier & keeping them filled has become part of my daily routine which I love. Once you have set up a feeding station it’s imperative you ensure it’s constantly filled & stocked up as over time birds will get used to it & have been known to travel a couple of miles to get to a feeder they know is constantly filled especially in the colder months of winter when finding food is a lot more difficult. If a small bird does fly that distance but the feeder is empty he would have used up a lot of energy for nothing which can sometimes be fatal for a small bird at this time of year. I found putting the feeders close to bushes & trees gave me the best results as it gives them somewhere to escape to if a predator like a Sparrowhawk is close by, it also gives the waiting birds somewhere to perch whilst waiting their turn. Through trial & error I found that at this time of year the birds need high energy foods & I’ve found round here they prefer; sunflower hearts, fatballs & peanuts, I also make my own suet mix which I put in a feeder which includes mealworms, currants / raisins, wild bird seed mix & crushed peanuts which they adore. Regarding perches, try & keep as much space behind them as possible to get those lovely buttery blurry shots. Really sorry for the long email & hope you get as much enjoyment as my wife & I get watching the birds in your garden.

@ They seem to be there favourite & where I am seem to attract a number of different species of birds which to date I have counted 39 different species in my garden. The problem you may get is keeping up with the demand as so many birds once they get to know your feeders will be regular visitors & you might have to start looking for larger feeders to try & minimise the amount of times your filling them. To give you an example, when I first got here I was using the same size feeders as you are currently using but as the feeders became more popular found I was filling them up on some days twice a day! I went online & found a site that sold feeders for high population areas & also spoke to Gigrin Farm & a few nature reserves as noticed they used these larger feeders. Larger feeders mean more food is needed but this can be bought online in large 25kg bags which works out a lot cheaper to buy. I know it sounds like a pain, but the rewards can be amazing. Good luck 👍

I love watching how other people set up their gardens for wildlife. We’re in a similar habitat to you, we have an acre field backing directly onto farmland, so have quite a few visitors to our plot. Our previous house, was a temp 2 bed in the same village, just on the opposite side. We were in it for nearly a year whilst waiting for a suitable larger house to come on the market. I mention that house because the garden was approx 6m x 4m ( 20ft x 12ft ), despite its puny size, the birds regularly on our feeders were amazing, I’d be topping the food up by 1pm, they would clean us out. Don’t be discouraged if your garden is small, put out the right food and the birds will come. For us, white sunflowers hearts are the best, even a Reed Bunting was tempted to dine with us.

Great to see the bullfinch pair, keep as much ivy as possible its one of the best things for wildlife in the garden. Another lovely video Jo. Great idea to set up your garden! Perfect time to start, too. Remember that birds will queue for a busy feeder, so perhaps fixing a couple of small branches onto or close to the feeder will allow them to do that. Important also, is to set up your hide as soon as you can, so that the wildlife can get used to seeing it in place. Some crackin' shots in the snow! I do like your photo editing style too. Not too heavy-handed. Keep up the good work! 🙂📷

@JoHeard it looked as if you had plenty of branches to do it some could be used as perches aswell, depending on how far you wanted to go with a blind but if the old tarp in the garden isn't holed you could make a frame from the top of the blind going into the bank for the tarp to go over so you had a roof whilst sitting behind the blind naturally it all comes down to what & how much material you have laying around but if you can make something up that works & just cost's you a bit of time it's always a win

Hi Jo, Personally I would have half apples on the floor, your wild bird seed try and get wheat free as some small birds just chuck it on the ground and that could attract rats. White hearts in feeder especially for Goldfinches, a descent size log not that high to sprinkle some seed on as I find my Dunno is feed off there but not on seed tray. Next thing I want to do is the long perch what you’ve done especially with the moss. Anyway that’s it and look forward to your next video, keep up the good work, Trevor👍

I'm a little surprised at the "trim the ivy" comments. In my book you can't have too much ivy. It doesn't harm the trees it is on and any sail effect only affects weak trees that might well need culling anyway. The benefit to (a huge variety of) wildlife cannot be underestimated. It helps the smallest members of the foodchain with associated benefits further up. All those birds you are trying to attract will thank you if you leave it, so please don't remove it. Oh, and YES, stick in a pond as someone else suggested. Great new video - I look forward to seeing your progress from over here in Pembrokeshire! 🙂

Ivy doesn't harm a healthy tree what it does however, is create a huge 'wind sail' and for shallower rooted species it can cause them to fall. Personally I would plant some ( or take cuttings) somewhere else Over wooden posts (an 8' fencepost in a 2ft post socket ) and take it off your trees.
@JoHeard
@JoHeard 17 күн бұрын
That's a good point, I think I'll try and remove some of it, just as there is so much there and attempt to replant the ivy elsewhere 👍

My wife placed a feeding station where she could observe from the house and there are bushes just behind that the birds like to hide in so in that respect it is very successful. Unfortunately I find the area too dark to photograph without using a ridiculously high ISO so I would recommend you place your feeding station where you have good light.

Hi Jo, nice video! You are lucky to be our in the countryside. Try watching Mark Carwadines (BBC) video on photographing garden birds. You gotta control those little guys and get them to go where you want them to go. Think you have a north facing garden that also slopes down north to south so getting the birds into some sunlight is going to be a challenge. I think the hill in the distance would make a good background? 😊
@JoHeard
@JoHeard 16 күн бұрын
I'll make sure to check him out 👍 the sun isn't too much of an issue at the moment as it's so far away from the garden that the background is still mostly in shade, I'll have to get creative when the trees are in full leaf as they shade the garden a bit but the background is in full light (at least in the corners by both big trees) but that is something I can work on then and get back to you all with 😂

Interesting to see your ideas. Consider that any feeder you place in your garden needs to take into account predators. Small birds need protection very near where they feed. Underneath or very close by put some tangled stems/branches/bracken so that small birds can get in but raptors cannot. The safer small birds feel the more will come. Do you want to attract ground feeders such as blackbirds, thrushes, Chaffinch, Dunnocks they need an open space near to somewhere they can quickly hide from predators. Water is a must, a bird bath or a shallow reflection pool or go all out and put a small pond in, I have a shallow 4 x 4 foot plastic tray that I sunk into the ground and birds love to bath in it including a Tawny Owl. Suet is a Long tailed tit magnet, they absolutely love it. Chopped peanuts or sunflower hearts are better for smaller birds Bluetit, Great tit, Coal tit, Bullfinch, Greenfinch. If you want to try and attract Woodpecker try holes in your upright branches and fill with suet or peanuts they'll like that and its more natural for photography. A great start 👍 so keep it going and enjoy, I'm along for your journey.

That's is some brilliant advice and ideas for me to try out 👍 I like the idea of it being on a table rather than all over the grass as well. I didn't think about removing the feeders for when I am photographing, but that makes sense to encourage them onto the sets I make 👍

Nice little video young lady but I have a couple of questions Question one before you started when you were talking about the Sun on how you get shade and where it's at and stuff and how many hours and at you get have you made a sun chart and a diagram of exactly where the Sun is where it comes up at and where does it set at for at least the first 6 months of your home I don't know when you purchased it I don't know how long you've had it but it's just a common thing that I do even in my apartment and then after I figured all of that out then I can go ahead and put seed down or or other stuff for the animals and whatnot so I have a better understanding of where is the sun at where is my moon at where does it rise where does it set exact spots for a whole year so I can optimize my viewing of birds and animals

Excellente this vidéo, I love it. And I do the same in my garden. One small regret, you speak to fast for me. And because I'm french, it's sometime difficult to understand what you are saying. But I'm going to see your other vidéo now 😁

Nice vlog Jo. My tips for feeders is sunflower hearts for finches. Mine has Goldfinches queuing up some days. Also I’ve found the Long Tail tits seem to like the Peckish brand of suet nuggets.

oooo that's really helpful! I have a load of suit balls but not the feeder yet, but will look at getting the sunflower hearts also 👍

Ensure plenty of perches are around feeders, choose good perches are prune around then so you don't get sticks in front of birds, or clutter behind. If you push copper pipe into the ground you can change to stick if you need to, even find one with lichen. Did I send to a link to my latest small bird video, it may give you ideas, tricky as no one has made a comment yet, being barely visible it takes an age. kzbin.info/www/bejne/npmuqqRohs9sabM

I would say remove quite a lot of the Ivy. For me, it spoils the look of the trees.

Get rid of those ugly blue tarp remains as soon as possible! Those look awful. And I think those peanut feeders might become slightly more popular if you first slightly crush the nuts.
