Nice work! Regard the shirring, longest stitch length, loosen the tension, stitch attest 3 rows to see the shirring and, lastly steam it to shrink the elastic threads.

Sewaldodiy is right. Also, each row makes it shirr more and more so you were probably doing good, you just needed to keep going

For shirring elastic thread on bobbin, try using the longest stitch length instead of average or shorter length. Also, the more rows you do the better it works. Also, a light steam with the iron pulls stitches up a bit more. Keep practicing, it's really a fun technique for up-cycling. The jacket crop is perfect. I scored a suede one for $2 at an estate sale I've been contemplating cropping.

I was going to say the same! I remember seeing someone on the Martha Stewart show demonstrate shirring, and she used a spray bottle and then iron to sort of shrink the elastic and smoosh the lines together. I have my little spool of elastic but haven't tried yet! 😅

Love the skirt, especially the clean inside finish. For shirring: Keep stitching a few more rows next to each other for a greater effect, and finalize by steaming the area with your iron to shrink it in some more. Hope that helps.

Hi, I'm 74, I wear the few clothes I have for years. Then they become crafts: doll clothes, ribbon, jewelry, home decor, and rags. My daughter gets bags of clothes from friends and I pick one or two items from each bag. Near Chicago, Tina, Al's wife

That jacket came out so good and looks perfect now. You polished the diamond! If you would divulge what white marking pen you use there. I have not found what works to mark on black. It looked like it made a very clear white line. Wow. Chalk is not really working for me and other things have just not made a very visible mark.
@eleanorstievaАй бұрын
thank you so much!! For the white pen, I actually just use a white gel pen. It doesn't come out of the fabric though, so you just have to be careful when marking it! Usually it will be covered with serging or bias binding in the end.

For the elastic thread I use regular thread and top stich over the elastic thread using a zig zag stich / pulling the elastic thread as you go . It should scrunch up enough but you can pull the elastic thread gently to make it scrunchier < new word lol

You have to adjust your bobbin tension and yes the bobbin does need to be pulled somewhat tight for the elastic thread. It takes a lot of trial and error to find what works best for your machine.. also I don’t know if you would have had enough elastic thread in the end it uses lots of the thread which is super annoying. I watched some good tutorials to do mine and still took a while
@eleanorstievaАй бұрын
thanks for the advice!! i definitely need to try again
@kimmiller7635Ай бұрын
Love your upcycles, especially the jacket 🖤 Tips for the shirring: You need to use the white elastic you have. On my top loading bobbin Brother machine I have to take the throat plate off and make sure the elastic passes a little groove to ensure there is enough tension (a tip I learnt on a YT video that I can’t seem to find anymore) If you have a front loading bobbin you might need to tighten the bobbin case to get enough tension. Good luck x
@eleanorstievaАй бұрын
thank you so much!! i have a top loading bobbin so i should look into that further, see if it'll work for me as well!

for shirring: did you try tightening top thread and bobbin thread too?? i too have a brother machine and it works for me

I didn't try the top thread! maybe that's something i have to experiment with

On the blue skirt. Instead using all of the under skirt. I would use a lighter weight fabric then cut the under skirt the length you want then add to the lighter fabric. This way you won’t have so much bulk around your waistline and won’t be as heavy.

something i will keep in mind the next time i have a full skirt :)
