Not trying to worry you but this is my experience. I remember! I was 10. I lived close to my school and went home to take a Tylenol because I had a headache. Had every intention of going back to school, but found out I got my period. Unfortunately endometriosis runs in my family, so the cramping was unreal! Took a hot bath cuz mom recommended it and after I got out, I remember I felt faint. All I remember after that is calling for my mom and a snippet of being walked down the hallway with my mom trying to hold me up, then waking up on the floor of the living room with a pillow and blanket. I don’t remember even reaching the end of the hall or laying down. Unfortunately for me, it got worse when I turned 19. Not only was the cramping still ungodly horrible, but I got vertigo and started getting sick. It was horrible! I crawled to the bathroom because I couldn’t stand without losing my balance from the room spinning. Luckily the vertigo didn’t happen often or near as sever as it was the first time but the sickness stayed as a symptom for me. Now I’m on birth control just so I can not be sick every month so I can function. This is just my experience. It’s definitely not like this for everyone. Mine is exasperated because of Endo. But certainly, there are many women who experience the same things. Migraines are also a common symptom. I know a few people who have never had a cramp in their life, which Im glad they don’t experience. Honestly, you won’t know what to expect until it happens. But empathy, support and listening goes a long way. Especially if it’s a bad day. It’s something I really appreciate about my boyfriend. I’d complain about how awful it is and he’d listen.

And while 13 is still clearly a baby, it's a pretty important milestone in the movie for a lot of reasons. She's making her own decision about what to like independent of her parents, they made the money for the tickets on their own and they're going to an event for "teenagers" all on their own. Those are all the kinds of thing that first made me feel like an adult when I was that age.

First time viewer of your channel and I love the dynamic! Regarding periods, my suggestion would be to tell your daughters early so they won't be startled when it happens. I remember asking my mom when I was in Kindergarten what those "weird looking things" are, and she told me those were pads, and I would need to use it once I get older. Thanks to her wisdom, I did not freak out at all when I got my first period. I just walked up to her and said calmly, "I got my period." She cooked lots of food that day and told me my first step to womanhood deserved a big celebration. My dad was the one looking uncomfortable, probably because he wasn't ready to accept the fact that I wasn't a little kid anymore 😂

On a scale of 1-10 I'd say 5 or less maybe. I got my period at age 12 in 7th grade. Where I live they give 5th graders VERY BASIC information about puberty before they go to middle school. It was only one class and we got sent home with pads and a pamphlet. But being 5th graders we just found it funny and weren't paying attention. When I first got my period I thought I was dying, the pain was so bad it's what I imagine child birth is feels like, there was so much blood, vomiting, and it started AFTER I got to school that day. Luckily now that I'm older the pain is less but still hurts. I remember thinking "Why me?", "Why now?", and "I'm disgusting.". I suggest learning as much as possible about periods like symptoms (cramps, bloat, diarrhea, etc...) and helpful tips(heating pads, medicine, hot patches, etc..) and teach them. Just be there as comfort for your daughters. And don't be mad if they don't want to talk to you about it, I didn't want to talk to my mom at all. It's still very important discussion to have and they'll thank you in the long run.

The worst thing you could do as the parents did was to 1. not talk to her about it and only waited till after it happened before they did, 2. reacted negatively (dread, worry, fear etc.) towards it. Your child would have a distorted view towards the topic just by observing your reaction towards it, even if you say otherwise. Period is natural, just as how turning into a red panda is for this family, but the parents' personal bias against the issue resulted in overprotectiveness which led to a reverse effect on everything.

8:49 - You don't have to panic. Sure, at first, you would feel weird, anxious and awkward trying to figure out how to approach this. But, knowledge is power. Once you know, you'll realise you aren't feeling as anxious as before. Do some prep by reading, watching educational videos or animations about menstruation and pay close attention to how this could be explained to your daughters so that they won't feel scared or disgusted. Teach them how to fix a pad, tell them about the cramps and what they could do to reduce the pain, give them some tips. And if they feel awkward to talk to you about this and feel comfortable talking about this to their mom instead, respect it and give them their privacy. But be there for them whenever they need. Edit: Most males (especially from conservative or orthodox families) try to avoid this conversation. They don't want any part of it. They leave it to the moms or the women in the family. The fact that you are willing to try is itself a plus point. You are half-way there. You'll be fine.

When my kids got their periods I was worried about how I'd handle it because I have a Mirena IUD, so I haven't had to deal with a period myself since 2007 (for context I'm 39 now). But honestly, it is so much easier than it used to be. We bought period underwear (because we care about the planet) and it's so easy and user friendly. My kids were already doing all their own laundry by then (because we taught them basic life skills pretty young) which made it so simple and straightforward. They just rinse them in cold water in the sink for half an hour and then toss them in with their regular laundry load. No mess, no fuss. We bought them enough pairs to last their whole cycle and it was a one time expense, so much more affordable than pads or tampons! I had them try out old style pads for their first cycle, while we were waiting for their period underwear to arrive (we bought Thinx brand, they have a special line of underwear for teens and tweens that fit better when they don't have curves yet) so they know how to use pads in case of emergency and can appreciate how much easier and more comfortable the period underwear are then pads. Anyway, it's all so low-maintenance that I rarely even know when they're on their period, but they track all of that in their Clue App themselves (we live in Canada so it's safe to use an app here) so they know when to expect it, etc. And yeah, other than that, all we had to do was buy them chocolate to celebrate their first cycle and that was it 🤷😊 (Disclaimer: I don't think my kids really get heavy periods and I know they rarely get cramps or other symptoms, so when I talk about how "easy" it is, keep in mind that every kid is different and for some people periods can be absolute hell, so we were fortunate and I recognize that! 🙏)

8;47 Just remember its going to be scarier or and more painful for them since their bodies are basically having a clean-out that will last a few days. Just remember to make it easier by having painkillers in the house (may take a little while to kick in but will help a lot when they do) and to have plenty of pads - or the new period underwear that you just rinse out in the shower before washing and then use again so you won't have to buy so many pads (if any, 5- pairs of the underwear should do the trick). And yes something like a hot water bottle is extremely useful, having something warm and comforting to hold on the stomach is soothing. And under no circumstances do what Ming did to Mei at 10:33, just drop them off at the front desk or better yet ask before they leave for school.

I know I said this before in a comment, but now that you said you have 2 daughters, you gotta watch the show "My So Called Life", even if you don't do a reaction. I feel like it's the most realistic depiction of what's going on in the mind of a girl during that time in her life. It's the kind of show I wish more guys would watch so they can finally see that perspective. And now, about Turning Red, I love that you did a reaction to this and I love how relatable it is for people growing up in the 90s or early 2000s with the tamagotchis and the boy bands and all that, and I don't know if you've noticed but one of the girls, Priya, when she's shown reading a book, the book looks like Twilight which I found hilarious :))

If you and your family/friends have calmly, carefully kept the girls up to speed about what's coming, working to levels they can cope with? Menstruation is still angsty, but it doesn't have to be this crazy. It helps to know it's coming, where pads and tampons are, how they're worn, that bleeding and cramps are not unusual. That it's tied into becoming mature enough to have babies. Do the pre-ed in installments, aim for what your kids can deal with, and let them know that you can make your own good choices about ALL of it, from whether you're ready for tampons yet, to making choices about sex and pregnancy. Let them KNOW that they have choices and that those choices do have consequences. But otherwise? If you don't panic, they won't.

I think this movie was targeted directly toward Millennials who were young teens in the early 2000s and have kids about to enter puberty now. My daughter fits that category, and this movie resonates with me because I remember how she was then, including the Tomugachi. Something few people notice: Priya has already started her period. Subtle clues were her budding figure and the fact she had deodorant handy, but the big one is that she offered her own "extra" pads to Mei. The point is that even if your daughter hasn't started her period, if she's in middle school (or even the upper elementary grades) she has classmates who _have_ started their periods. And there are tampon dispensers in the girls' restrooms these days (even in elementary school). So if parents haven't had that discussion with their daughter about menstruation...someone else _has._ And she probably got bum information.

"...I have two daughters... how scary is this gonna be for me..." If you find it scary, you're the problem. This _whole movie_ is a condemnation of Ming's parenting, along with generational trauma. "...why is everybody so fast in Disney/Pixar movies..." Imagine how much longer these scenes would be if they were slow. It's _mostly_ interesting when the scene takes about 3 minutes, but if it took the _much_ more realistic _ten_ minutes or, worse, fifteen to twenty... that'd be a _third_ of your movie watching them move along streets... kinda boring. So they're _fast_ to allow them to get through the scenery and tell the story. "...chia pet? ... can y'all tell us what they were called, and if you had one..." Tamagotchi. And no. "...why is the mom so big?..." Why do some women have periods so severe that without medical control they end up in the hospital? ... Genetics. And it _doesn't_ always pass on. Sometimes you just get unlucky. "...how do you spell that..." Her actual name is 'Meilin', but she tends to go by 'Meimei'. You can find out from the captions. :) "...how you feel about this movie?" I believe I've watched it twice, and now seen perhaps 15 reaction videos to it because I like going over it again. ... Along with Encanto.

Disney taking a risk to push nightmare horror scary fuel in kids film with no limits and sense of horror elements and the nightmare scene when Mei seeing a terrifying supernatural being and scary beings and a horrorland of death and about her family it's like The Ring meets Willy Wonka and mixed with blumhouse and a24 new line cinema and creepy ominous music with sinister theme and they should have a wicked villain voice in her nightmare: YOU can't escape me Mei I'm Nightmare Man and The Boogeyman of your dreams (sinister laughing in the background) I wish Disney can do nightmare scenes and scary moments in movies and put horror elements like bad dreams and nightmare sequences to terrifying the viewers and audiences and kids tbh if this was in theaters they gone be scared traumatized frightened crying and cover their eyes from this scene 😬😬👀👀😳😳

On a scale of 1-10, I’d say probably a 9. But if you really want to be prepared, try to do as much research as you can and remember to stock up on the three essentials to help get through a period: chocolate, Advil, and tampons. Lots and lots of tampons.

Question. Since magic is clearly very real in that world, as are the gods (since it was one of them that 'blessed' the family with the power of transformation in the first place), wouldn't the smart and easy fix to everything be to just pray to that god again and ask them to remove the magic from the family, since it wasn't needed any more for the original purpose it was granted? Really seems like they were quick to gloss over the GODS' involvement in all this. Sun Yee was the ancestor that first received the magic. She wasn't the god who created it. So, yeah, all the 'inconveniences' the family experience were really their own fault. Mei really was completely blameless in all this. Also, Tyler should have been mauled. The brat.

20:40 - no, that doesn't sound right. All through the movie they keep mentioning these 13 year olds turning into women and that's sick. They are barely teenagers, way to skip ahead.
@curlyxcoco2 жыл бұрын
okay but this happens in real life. most of the times movies are not just pushing stuff onto its audience, it’s telling a story and surprise ! reality is fucked up. the adults in this movie multiple times even said the kids were “women” but that’s what some parents say and that’s just how it is. why are you blaming the movie for portraying that? it’s literally not a bad movie

OH NO, 13 years old girls thinking that they are entering womanhood because now they are teenagers and starting to define their own path, entering puberty, getting crushes, having feelings... WHAT A CRAZY WORLD?????? /s

No, when me and my friends turned 13 we thought we were grown ASF. We thought we could do anything. That's typical 13 year old behavior, trying to grown up quick. Same with the concert thing too, it reminds me so much of how I acted it's funny.

This movie is pure trash and exposing small children to teen issues and horniness of a teen girl is beyond disappointing from a pixar movie. They are gonna get so much hate from parents of small children!

Teen girl issues? The average age for girls to start puberty in the US is 10.
@katarinawikholm58732 жыл бұрын
@@CurseT13 There is a world outside the US, strange as it seems.
@CurseT132 жыл бұрын
@@katarinawikholm5873 Simply put, most of the studies are heavily based in the US, hence the wording. Average age for onset of puberty range between 8 and 13 world wide, 10 seems to be a pretty decent average there.
