Turning Red: 25 Things You Missed

It seems like every movie these days has more Easter Eggs than anything else, and Pixar’s latest, ‘Turning Red’, is no different. The new hilarious, emotional, awkward and endearing animated movie is packed full of Easter Eggs, hidden jokes and references, as well as nods and homages to director Domee Shi’s hometown of Toronto - most of which are very, very, very Canadian.
In this video we will take a look at all of the things you (might have) missed and some of the blink and you miss it moments that you probably didn’t catch on the first time around. This will include a reference to Pixar’s upcoming movie Lightyear, Easter Eggs for Toy Story, Coco, Luca, Finding Nemo, Up, Bao and Monsters, Inc. references to a number of Pixar shorts (such as The Blue Umbrella and some SparkShorts), the classic Pixar Easter Eggs that you will see in basically every one of their movies (such as the Pizza Planet Truck, A113 and the Luxo Ball), references to the Anime movies that influenced it, the significance of the character names and the date May 25th, secret nods to Toronto’s major sports teams (such as the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs and Raptors), homages to Canada with a plethora of Canadiana, the roots for 4-Town’s name, a joke at Twilight’s expense and a bunch of other interesting content! So get ready to return to the streets of the 6, as we go through 25 things you missed in Turning Red.

Personally, I really like the way that Pixar has a history of making their animated characters look like the voice actors. Not only look like the voice actors but also have a lot of the same mannerisms and movements. It's always hilarious to me when you see the person that voiced them and realize they look exactly like their animated counterpart.

Lol I loved the Toledo Ohio reference! Canada is on the opposite side of Lake Erie from us. And we’re right on the border into Michigan, so concert tours indeed often go Toledo, Detroit (and/or other nearby Michigan cities), Toronto…or that order in reverse. We’re only about an hour away from Detroit and the bridge into Canada. And you can see Canada from Put-In-Bay, which is on an island in Lake Erie. From the top of The Perry Monument, you can see all the islands, Cedar Point, and the Canadian coast.

Another explanation for the SYST3MS license plate that I've heard is that it's a nod to the Systems team at Pixar which was able to make it so that the animators could work from home during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

I loved this movie because i grew up there and roughly around that time period. The daisy mart was a real chain of stores and seeing the sign made me feel like a cringy kid again. The nostalgia trip alone in that movie made me emotional.
