There was nothing in Turning Red that I related to. I'm not the target demographic.
But did the film still manage to make me care?
Here's my Review!

What do you mean I didn't add a tanooki sound at 9:28? I have no idea what you're talking about

People who were so quick to call Ming abusive or Mei a rebellious deviant are so out of touch when it comes to family dynamics of asian families. Ming was by no means a perfect mother but that was because of the fact that being perfect was instilled in her since childhood. That's a VERY common thing among Asian families, and as an Asian they nailed it so well and it's clear it came from an understanding place. In fact, the way Turning Red portrayed it was far more ideal since in reality, it's somewhat more common for our mothers to not come to that understanding. (i.e Wu reconciling with Ming). I'm glad you tried and came to understand the family dynamic, especially from a cultural stance since that's the point that flew over a bunch of negative critics' heads.

⬜ people never fail to hate on media that isn't made explicitly for them. Like, this is clearly written from the Asian perspective, and so ⬜ viewers had a meltdown cuz god forbid their delicate sensibilities aren't catered to.

To me a character being relatable is secondary to my enjoyment of the media. I would rather have a character who I can understand than see a blank slate for me to project on. And while I could relate to Mei's relationship with her mother (dear god that part was relatable to me), I could not relate to other aspects (i.e. being Asian, being a prodigy etc.) but I could understand and empathize with those aspects of her character. I think where you succeeded, and what reviewers like Enter failed to do was properly try and was understand Mei. Edit: it's very obvious that they didn't want to try and understand Ming's parenting from a cultural perspective, or any other cultural perspective.

I disagree that Ming wasn't abusive. You're right that Ming clearly cares about Mei, and the movie tries to show where her approach to parenting came from. However, abuse doesn't have to be done out of malice, and people can abuse those they care about. It's not black and white. I don't feel Ming is held accountable for all she did. She does mention the pressure she put on Mei to honor her, and she says that Mei is hard on herself. However, Ming doesn't fully acknowledge the humiliation, shame, and turmoil she caused Mei, her behaviour toward Mei's friends and the shop worker, or what she did at Mei's school. This trauma could have a long-term negative impact on Mei. I'm not Mei, but, from my experience, it's very difficult to unlearn mindsets formed in childhood. It's confusing and painful to be told things that directly contradict what you were taught over many years. I feel the ending should have shown how Ming and Mei felt after their conflict. The gradual process of denial, grief, and acceptance could have been explored. If my mother treated me like that, it'd take me a long time to forgive her or feel like I'm on good terms with her. I also feel the narration at the start and end of the film could have been cut-down a lot. It feels a bit cheap and points-out things that the audience could just infer themselves.

It's a VERY subversive movie. The stuff hiding in plain sight in this one...oh boy. It's on my list to review in March. It's really not a positive movie at all, and the final line is chilling in its covert intent. You gotta look behind the curtain sometimes.

I really enjoy your review style. You seem fair and you explain your points pretty well. Plus because you sound so calm and collected its kind of relaxing to watch. You're also funny I like that. Keep up the good work!

I don't understand why people get so hung up on relatablility? Is empathy not a thing anymore?

Thought the movie was alright. I did like the relationship between Mei and Ming, the mythology behind the red panda, and the expressiveness of the animation. However, while I did like the expressive animation, the actual artstyle still rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it’s just me, but it does give me a bizarre mishmash of style that sorta clash to me. Like, I can definitely see the anime influences there, but unlike most anime, which has characters with large eyes, this movie has characters with way smaller ones with large mouths, so whenever they do a “kawaii anime” expression, the punchline doesn’t hit as well as it should. I guess they wanted to go for a more Studio Ghibli type of aesthetic, however, those movies aren’t really known for their crazy exaggerated expressions, even in their most fantastical and comedic. Comedy was also hit-or-miss, where some of the jokes did get a good chuckle out of me, while the some others did make me groan “intention cringe or not”, and I’m pretty sure 70% of it came from Abby. I also think the first act did go way too fast. I know the point was to introduce the world and characters, but I was dreading that the whole movie was just gonna go a mile a minute while throwing every joke and plot beat it could to wrap itself over with. Overall, nice flick that I’ll probably never watch again anytime soon: mostly because I really only cared about Sonic 2 and Bad Guys right now.

@Bären Television Z or your sense of humor is less. There were plenty of adults who loved this movie. Even if we didn’t relate to it. And no, it wasn’t. Domee explained that it was influenced off of her own childhood and anime. Idiot

I really appreciate this video. I personally really did not like the movie due to May, but I liked her mom. I am happy I was not the only one to think that. I hate the way this film looks as well. It does not appeal to be aesthetically. The characters just look too ugly.

i thought it was average. The frends were meh. The family dynamic was good. The panda was good but eh.. kinda needed more variety then just good or bad/angry. id give it like.. a 7/10 tbh
