As a firefighter we like using the pulaski because it helps us make a fireline to help stop the fire from burning other unburned fuel

On my wood handled tools, I leave the rasping troughs. They wear in and become the comfortable texture.

For every two downstrokes do one upstroke with your axe cuts. This will ensure an easier felling.

I learned not to do "up" strokes to keep the axe from glancing off into my face. (I'm already ugly enough and don't need any help there.) With a shallow down-cut and a steep down-cut you can accomplish the same thing.

I saw one of these in a pawn shop a couple days ago. i thought the same as you. It would be great to keep in the truck. It is not as good as a true ax nor as tough as a pick ax, but it is not meant to be. It is good enough to cover for the other tools when necessary. Your finished product looks great though. I am taking notes to try and copy you.

So it comes from Harbor freight with what i would define as not a real cutting edge. Wood handles are nice if you don't mind replacing them when they crack and split. I have used both kinds and like them both it depends on the hand tool and the punishment you put it under . Of course my round point shovel has a steel handle so there that way also. it is not made for splitting fire wood you have to remember its origin and design purpose cutting fire line ; so grubbing out a hand line with the hoe, cutting large roots with the bit , small roots with the hoe , cutting and moving small snags out of the fire line, removing small limbs from live and dead trees to prevent the fire from spreading. It is good for bush craft .

you could also say that the "softening" of tempering is because while the first quench makes it hard but brittle so the softening makes it malleable to take impacts

In the Rocky Mountain areas the ground is fucking stubborn and a shovel just doesn't cut it when you're up in the mountains. There are more rocks than dirt in a lot of places and those are the best digging tools for a place like that. It's not the best axe in the world but it's great for digging.

There is a specification for the eye-dimension. It is a National Forest Service Standard, or NFPA Regulation... Eye Dimensions of tools is a broad topic. There are even specific types of wood for different tools, subject to their purpose and reduction of carpal-tunnel-syndrome. It was common for the village blacksmith to develop CTS.

Usually they are lighter than this and more balanced I have one and it seems to split wood better than chop but as for a fire line tool I’d rather a lighter one easier to cut line with in my opinion

I don't think these axes are designed for felling. I've never used one as an axe. We used them for trenching, and used the axe for cutting roots we encountered. That's it.

well better than it was but it's from india and tools like that the indians don't do so well! as long as you're not cutting a fire line every week with it it'll probably do ya` just fine! i know one thing i wish they'd just sell the heads instead of using fiberglass handles or at least figure out a way to hang the head without using an entire gallon of epoxy! a while back i swapped an axe head to a wood handle on one and it took all damn day to get that handle remnants and epoxy crud out of the eye!

I'd just hit the head with a weed burner. No need to go to the steel's critical temperature. It makes sense for them to make the handle as solidly mounted as possible since hardly anyone is going to buy this crap to modify except out of utter boredom (which is fine, I do plenty of stuff out of utter boredom!).
