My good friend and terrific economist, George Hoguet, is a big fan of Economics Matters -- the Podcast and suggested he interview me rather than my interviewing him. George has held hugely important positions in government, international institutions, and the private finandicl I think you'll enjoy this one. We get into the big policy issues we all care about. As some of you know, I ran as a write-in candidate for President in 2016. My fantasy was to win, but my objective was to lay out what economists would do were we in charge of economic policy. Unfortunately, there are 535 members of Congress. Not one holds a PhD in economics. No surprise that economic policy is a complete disaster everywhere you look. My platform for fixing policy is posted at kotlikoff.net. You can download it for free. I turned it into a book called, You're Hired! You can download it for free at kotlikoff.net. Anyway, do listen if you'd like to learn how I'd fix our outrageously expensive and criminally inefficient healthcare system, our completely bankrupt Social Security system, our tax-benefit system whose main accomplishment is locking the poor into poverty, our healthcare system that spends almost twice the share of GDP as other developed countries and delivers third-rate healthcare outcomes, and more.
Here's George's short bio.
George Hoguet is a private investor and CEO of Chesham Investments, LLC. He also consults to various institutional investment committees. For many years he led the active emerging markets institutional equity investment team and served as Global Investment Strategist at State Street Global Advisors, one of the world’s largest investment managers. In this capacity he worked with some of the world’s largest institutional investors, including central banks and sovereign wealth funds. He spent the first part of his career in investment banking at Citicorp Investment Bank and Bankers Trust Company, where he worked on oil and gas mergers and acquisitions and supervised the bank’s business in Africa. From 1981-1984 he served at the US Treasury Department, first as U.S. Alternate Executive Director at the World Bank and subsequently, as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs.
