Stratus and cumulus refer to the cloud shape, flat and long, and fluffy, respectively. Nimbus refers to storm clouds, IIRC something to do with how high they climb vertically. Nimbostratus and cumulonimbus are commonly known as storm clouds. Alto clouds are found in the mid stratosphere 6km/4mi and they look like a sheet covering the sky, and cirrus clouds are found around 11km/8mi high and made of ice crystals. Alto and cirrus clouds can have stratus or cumulus form. Cirrostratus clouds are quite rare, but responsible for those beautiful mares tails in the sky. Then you have all those even rarer clouds like mammatus (aka booby clouds, because they look like boobs; have to have the right conditions), lenticular clouds (dome shaped clouds that form over mountains) and others I can't think of off the top of my head. We've had some pretty brutal weather in Sydney, Aus lately, so we've seen mammatus clouds, giant dust storms, a flooded in day, lots of hail (some areas got damaged badly) and walls of thunder clouds hit us, and because I live really close to the water (Pacific Ocean), we've had beach mist and it's been spooky because you just see a wall of fog. Anyway, I hope that was enough info :) I'm just recalling information from a year 6 weather project I did nearly 20 years ago, and I was the only student to do clouds, so yeah, soft spot!
