This webinar will provide an overview of four expert-endorsed neuroscience-informed interventions for addiction treatment: cognitive bias modification, contingency management, emotion regulation training and cognitive remediation. It will focus on the rationale and mechanisms engaged by these interventions, evidence of their efficacy, and the steps needed to incorporate them into routine clinical practice based on the conclusions reached by an international expert consensus driven by the Neuroscience Interest Group of the International Society of Addiction Medicine.
Through an exploration of novel neuroscience-informed interventions, the webinar will provide participants with the opportunity to increase knowledge, skills, and perceived self-competence regarding the therapeutic mechanisms, feasibility, practical steps for implementation, and potential benefits of incorporating these innovative interventions in day-to-day practice.
Objectives
1. Improve knowledge about neuroscience-informed interventions with potential to improve addiction treatment outcomes
2. Improve knowledge about the rationale and mechanisms of these interventions
3. Expand skills and competence regarding translation and application of these interventions into routine clinical practice
Antonio Verdejo-Garcia is a Professor (Research) in the School of Psychological Sciences and the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health at Monash University. He is also an NHMRC Leadership Fellow, and the Co-Chair of the Neuroscience Interest Group at the International Society of Addiction Medicine. He subsequently took on postdoctoral training in addiction neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, US), the University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK) and the Hospital del Mar Institute (Barcelona, Spain). Antonio's research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underpinning executive control and decision-making, and their implications for addictions, uncontrolled eating and obesity. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and edited a book on Cognition and Addiction (Academic Press, 2020).
