This album is truly an ode to the work of Parliament-Funkadelic, especially Maggot Brain and Bootsy Collins. The interpolation of those “I’d Rather Be With You” drums on Redbone reminds you of the former song instantly. This album changed everything for me as someone that was 18 when this album came out. Glover and co. created a gateway to the classic Funk and Soul of the 70’s, and it became my favorite reference point for music. That’s why I’m glad that other artists have followed suit with the help of producers like D’Mile (Lucky Daye, Victoria Monét, Silk Sonic). R&B/Soul got its groove back in the last few years, and I’m so happy about it!

Dude same I was such a big fan of Gambino and I listened to Because the Interent front to back hundreds of times, but with this album I thought it was such a flop, with only Redbone and Me and your Mama worth listening to. Now i'm all over the whole album I love soul and funk and just everything about this album

I discover so much new music from this channel, I used to be like Kevin and not know anything about Kendrick, Cudi, Childish Gambino, but you've opened my eyes to some amazing new artists and sounds

I stumbled upon this video in my recommended, and let me tell you it did not disappoint. The attention to detail and appreciation you take for music is incredible. In accounts to “Awaken my Love”. I wouldn’t know how to describe the first time I listened to “Redbone” I recall being younger and feeling many emotions, and I truly mean that. I had yet to feel mesmerized and left in shock by any song. From that day forward I would listen to Gambino’s music in true appreciation and respect. Childish Gambino, his voice, range, and ultimately way of singing takes you to a whole other world. Baby boy is one of my favourite songs in this album. The way the songs switches and shifts you through diverse ranges. Childish Gambino’s vocals, don’t make it any easier; The way his voice holds so much diversity and power is truly indescribable. The storyline in itself is incredible, but when combined with his vocals, the shift in the song and more…it truly creates a masterpiece. From start to finish…I feel it all. All emotions portrayed, to say I appreciate Childish Gambino would be minimal. He is truly a astonishing artist.

Listen to Funkadelic if you haven't! I love this album but Donald is basically doing covers of what george clinton, bootsy and the rest of the group did 40 years ago. See: "riot" sampling funkadelic's "good to your earhole", "redbone" being an interpolation of bootsy collins "rather be with you", and donald's vocal style mimicking george throughout.

I’ve loved Me and Your Mama + Redbone since this album dropped. But as time passed, I realized that Stand Tall is definitely my favorite song. I love the analysis you guys provided, specifically for Stand Tall. His voice throughout the album is constantly changing in tone and delivery. But the last song, he really embraced his raw voice and it blends so beautifully with the message. Standing tall and being true to yourself is a way of life, and it will help you navigate the difficulties that life has waiting for you.

I was at Pharos so my first time hearing the album was a live performance. Was mind blowing. Hearing the album a few months later would put me back in Joshua Tree. This may be his greatest work so far, for me.
