The "I can't breathe" in Walking in the Snow is in reference to Eric Garner who was also killed by police in a similar fashion to George Floyd and his last words were "I can't breathe", the song was written before George Floyd's death but they released the album literally right after.
@rayven20203 ай бұрын
if I remember right they even brought forward the release date by a few days. I had the album on pre-order so I was shocked when I got the email saying it was early. When I listened though it all made sense. I don't know if it's why they released it early but so much of the content seemed to be talking about the riots that where happening right there and then they would have been crazy to hold onto it for even a few days longer!
@Koogai2 ай бұрын
@rayven2020 you're right, the riots and protests surrounding Floyd were the reason, I think they dropped it like 2 days early

RTJ has the incredible alchemy --their music somehow manages to be alternately, and even at times simultaneously, hard, experimental, thought-provoking, funny and fun as hell. It's really mind-blowing when they lock-in (which is most of the time). It's surreal. Damn, what a blast watching you guys listen to this one. Can't wait til you get to the rest, particularly 2. Would love if you get into their solo stuff. R.A.P. Music (although that's in a lot of ways just RTJ beta mode) and Cancer4Cure ("Tougher Cokder Killer" might be my favorite collab between Mike and El--that beat and Mike's gonzo verse...mmaaaaaan) especially.

This is top 5 hip hop albums OAT for me personally so I was waiting for this. Also, the ending to “a few words for the firing squad” loops back to the beginning of “yankee and the brave”, making the album a perfect loop. One of my first IG posts was a video of RTJ performing RTJ 2 in Memphis at Minglewood, and she came out to do Love Again, commented on my post after the show. 10 years ago. It's legitimately hard to listen to Walking In the Snow now, but I'm so thankful she got to be part of that before she passed. Love Again is entertaining for sure, but Walking In the Snow meant something. Also, Mr Muthafuckin Exquire has some pretty good solo music.

I'm just at the start of the video and intend to watch it, but I remember when this album came out I thought it was the most well-timed, pointed album in my relatively short life time (I was like 26 at the time). I enjoy hip-hop a lot, but I'm a middle class white kid from Canada so as much I respect the genre, I can't relate to a lot of rap/hip-hop on the deepest levels, but I think just as a product of the time this album was very impactful to me.
