The drive of this piece and the sense of urgency it creates is incredible. Keeps you on edge constantly. There's no time limit to find the kids or the totem, but it damn well feels like there was, and combined with all the fires and ruins and enemies it really hammers home the feeling that you really need to get a move on if you want to accomplish your mission.

The sense of urgency !! That's exactly the type of energy this theme gives off. You can play this through a busy day while in the city, running errands and it fits perfectly. This is why I look into some of these old, gaming soundtracks just like movie scores. It's a drastic change and feel compared to listening to just musical artists that are signed to a label. I don't listen to music the way I would as a teen, I hear it according to my troubles, struggle and emotions that I may be going through. Regards from Los Angeles 🤝

Most Psx and N64 use samples to create music like this or Resident Evil for example, the difference is that the N64 has to process the music on its CPU or CoProcessor RPC whilst the Psx had a dedicated sound chip, thats why N64 games had to prioritize between better peformance or better sound resulting in Sound losing the battle most of the time.

@@MetalReaper7 Being memorable and being ahead of it's time is not the same. I just wonder how can this be ahead of it's time, what does it even mean for you, often I read that about music and never really known why people say that (probably for the reason the person simply likes the song). It's not something completely different and never heard of like.. I don't know, King Crimson or Michael Jackson, Frank Zappa it's not the beginning of a new era/kind of music etc. Those guys were beyond music of that time. So the question remains : Why is this ahead of music in 1998. I'm not trying to be an asshole, I'm just curious about your opinion and how you see that beyond music of the time. This track is great and all, for me it's good music from from a video game that sounds like other games of the time nothing was reinvented there, just a great track!

something about the orchestrations of these songs really sell the environment. there's a dampness to the instruments in this one that evokes the port, and it feels like a real human operation, saving civilians. later when it's alien levels it's all choirs and intense orchestral pomp

I found a MIDI version of this song and it's my fav song to play with my bard inside of FF14, and sometimes I have player stop by "YO is that Turok!? :D " and it always fills me with joy to meet someone else who grew up playing this

Someone commented this in the "Side 2 Side" video and I had to check -it really sounds alike. Most of the 3 6 music is sampled btw.

What is it with the late 90s and game music. Unreal tournament 99, Starcraft, Perfect Dark, Jet force Gemini (Well I guess everything from Rare from the N64), This. I guess there is an element of nostalgia to it. Got the 64 as a 7yo I think. Played it like crazy as a kid. Anyway, those are all great sources of inspiration for my own production (AAaah Plagiarism)! Well, I think actually that it is really good and fun to have people recycle ideas, as long as they make it their own. If that makes sense? (Maybe I'm just looking for excuses 🤣). I wonder if Mr Mitchell came up with this from scratch of if it too was created through morphing other ideas into his own. I have been told it is quite common for artists, to do. Personally I wouldn't know where to begin when writing something from scratch, without borrowing other ideas that are broadly the sound I am looking for. It can be just a simple 1 bar riff, and from that something can grow, but without it I dunno. Maybe it's just a matter of practice... By the way N64 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PC version (but maybe because I heard N64 first, so the other one would always sound wrong. Especially that it is in a different key throws me off so much 🤣)

Holy hell, you nailed all the shooters with incredible music there! Things like Forgone Destruction from Unreal Tournament and Robin Beanland's incredible work on Jet Force Gemini from the military base at Ichor to the moody Water Ruin... Amazing era for games music!
