Not necesarily. you can drive up as high you can and then hike about 2 hours, but starting at 3am is nice under the stars, above the clouds, and reaching the top at sunrise as i did

i also recommend getting an airbnb for 20$ as i did near the top of the drive, then being able to wakeup and walk and start the hike as early as u want
