Tustin Hangars - history and film locations

Hope you enjoy my vlog as I venture over to the Tustin Hangars, formerly the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, CA. These hangars were also in a few movies/shows such as Pearl Harbor, Star Trek, and The Hindenburg.

I was stationed at nearby El Toro, 1973-74. Drove by the base at Santa Ana, as it was referred to back then, many times. Lots of memories. Really great place to be stationed back then.

Grew up there in the 70's & 80's used to go to the airshows at MCAS Tustin walking aruond inside the hanger was so cool.

I was stationed at MCAS Santa Ana in 1977. Yes indeed, those hangers are HUGE. Ah, to be a 19 year old Marine NCO again. Was bummed when I was sent to be a Reserve Squadron trainer.

I was stationed there 86-90 - worked in the Hangar by the Tower. Strange seeing the flight line now a street LOL. I've seen the hangars in several commercials as well.

sadly the hangar you worked in next to the tower burnt down on the 6th /7th of Nov 2023 given the size of it and it being made of wood ect the fire dept had a tough time battling it (think it was a 2 alarm fire) no water suplly in the area ect mostly destroyed and in this vid (someones drone) kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHzbqI2daJeNo7Msi=yxV-vC-vUSPOb4Ex by daylight they had given up tbh as it was still burning at the control tower end where the hangar doors are ....so sad to see one of only 6 historical blimp hangars left in the USA go down like that! 😢

This is so cool! I met my husband aboard MCAS Tustin and we lived there from 95-98. I remember when From the Earth to the moon was filmed. They had little signs posted to help the crew find their way to the hangars. His unit had a Christmas party and a few family events inside as well. They were so neat! So glad to see they are still standing. Thanks for sharing this video. It’s been so long since I’ve seen them. ❤️

I was 12 when I first went inside the hanger, seemed enormous for sure. Later I supplied a ton of electronics for the miniseries 'From the Earth to the moon' and saw production engineers almost daily. They would describe the scene they wanted to do and I would show them what I had to do it. Electronic wiring, switches, lights, cables, panels, ducting etc and cool to see it all over in the movie. I offered to deliver an order for 'customer service' and it worked, got to get on set and watch some of the production. The guy I worked with said I was an 'advisor' so I could watch.

I started a factory school on t he PB250 computer in 19 68 in one of the hangers but finised the school at MCAS Santa Anna

@@LetYrLiteShine The good time equal the bad. Found alcohol in my room once and spent a lot of time pulling weeds out on the tarmac. I remember when Northridge hit the hangar doors came off the track. Had to use a crane to put them back in place. I was a weatherman and got to climb both hangars to change wind socks.

I was looking at old MCAS El Toro videos when I came across this video she made years ago I started watching her several years later right after she had moved to Henderson.

I'm still stuck over here in Palmdale/Lancaster I moved 95% of my belongings to storage in Henderson and then the rental bidding war started in April, it's been insane. Hopefully, I'll be there come May 2022 stay safe the both of you over there.

Incorrect, it's as tall as a 17 story building, 1000 ft long and 300ft wide !!
