01 Tutankhamun was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (ruled c. 1332-1323 BC in the conventional chronology), during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom or sometimes the New Empire Period. He has, since the discovery of his intact tomb, been referred to colloquially as King Tut. His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten", while Tutankhamun means "Living Image of Amun". In hieroglyphs, the name Tutankhamun was typically written Amen-tut-ankh, because of a scribal custom that placed a divine name at the beginning of a phrase to show appropriate reverence.[ He is possibly also the Nibhurrereya of the Amarna letters, and likely the 18th dynasty king Rathotis who, according to Manetho, an ancient historian, had reigned for nine years-a figure that conforms with Flavius Josephus's version of Manetho's Epitome. The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of Tutankhamun's nearly intact tomb, funded by Lord Carnarvon, received worldwide press coverage. It sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt, for which Tutankhamun's mask, now in the Egyptian Museum, remains the popular symbol. Exhibits of artifacts from his tomb have toured the world. In February 2010, the results of DNA tests confirmed that he was the son of the mummy found in the tomb KV55, believed by some to be Akhenaten. His mother was his father's sister and wife, whose name is unknown but whose remains are positively identified as "The Younger Lady" mummy found in KV35. The "mysterious" deaths of a few of those who excavated Tutankhamun's tomb has been popularly attributed to the curse of the pharaohs.

One of the truly great documentaries. I remember watching it as a small boy with my dad. And both of us being spellbound. Unforgettable moment. The best moments come at the very end... And at the start of part 2, "02 Tutankhamun" (Wonderful Things). Make sure you watch this too. Enthralling stuff.

I watched this series at first broadcast. (Sir) Christopher Frayling did such a good job in illuminating the cultural ramifications of the tombs rediscovery. I did chuckle at his quite sensible timidity in refusing to dare climb into some of the other, smaller, burial sites.

This series started my love of ancient Egypt. After this, I went and found a book my mum had on the shelf for years about Tutankhamun. That lead to more books, which ended up with the whole wall in our living room full of books! Just out of interest I noticed you said "in the conventional chronology" Could you be a follower of David Rohl?

We all wish we could travel back in time to that golden treasure filled antichamber. I'm proud to say I have actually make the trip. I didn't use a time machine - just took a UK train to the south. The DORCHESTER museum is a specially converted church for this brilliant use . . . And down the road you can visit great ages past with the dinosaurs.

I remember I used to watch the whole series time and again back in 1995 when I was just 13. I was so excited and mesmerized by it so that I wanted to be an egyptologist. To this day I get a goose bumps when I watch it. Time machine for sentimental brain whose being haunted by his own past. Thnx 4 the upload.
