Can you roll without weight shift? Yes you can. SHOULD you roll without any weight shift? No, you should not. Speedflyers are small paragliders and should be treated as such. Great idea to make an educational video about this but it is super important that the correct information is passed across. Rolling only on breaks can often cause the wing to spin. Also as mentioned in the video it is best learned at high altitude, with a reserve and ideally over water (with a rescue boat).

A roll is identical in nearly all ways to making a Loop on a paraglider. You can read the information for looping at: justacro.com/tricks/english/looping However, rolling with speedgliders is easier because the size of the canopy is smaller and the lines are shorter. As mentioned before, learn Rolling at high altitude, with a reserve parachute and ideally over water (with a rescue boat). In my mind there are 3 things required to make a safe roll. Energy, Timing and Input. ENERGY: Lots of energy is required to roll a speedglider safely. Rolling at slower speeds or from trimspeed is possible if you have a higher wingloading but is still not advisable. Energy is generated by previous wingovers or spiral as mentioned in the video above. TIMING: Rolling at the right time is very important. When you make turns (wingovers) or a spiral the wing will dive towards the ground as it is gaining energy. When you are learning to roll it is important to roll early, just before you reach the bottom of the dive ( just before the wing levels off again). This will mean that you have good energy and the roll will not need be completely over the wing, it will resemble more of a slightly offset fast spiral. As you have more experience with this learning roll you can experiment with rolling as you reach the bottom point of the dive (when the wing is level again) and this will give you a more vertical roll where you are directly over the wing. CAUTION: The most dangerous thing you you can do is to attempt a roll AFTER the wing has passed the bottom point of the dive and has started climbing (gaining altitude) again. If you try this the wing is already losing energy and at higher Angle of Attack meaning that the chance of spin or stall is much higher. INPUT: If you have correct Energy and Timing then the input required for a roll is not so large. You do not need to ROLL FAST, a slower roll will lose more height but it is almost impossible to fall into the canopy as long as you have energy and good timing. Weightshift should always be your main steering mechanism and is done (with most speedriding harnesses which are split leg) by pushing down significantly with your leg in the direction you wish to turn. If you are doing this with skis it is important to keep them side by side as one leg pushes down. AS the wing starts to roll on weightshift you use a small-medium break input in the same direction(all wings have different break lengths/inputs so you need to learn the stallpoint on your glider through Kiting the wing in the wind) to help complete the rotation. In the last part of the turn you can use a small outside break input to slow the rotation back into straight flight. There are different types of rolling techniques (pop roll, hesitation roll/dive roll) that differ from this but i believe this is the safest and easiest way for people to learn a roll. Anyone learning to roll should ideally learn through a trained instructor or very experienced mentors. Learning via KZbin is generally asking for trouble. I have only added my opinion here as i would prefer that the correct information is passed along to those who refuse to seek out proper education. I am always open to corrections/suggestions from other experienced pilots who may have any advice on improving this instruction. As mentioned in this video SPEEDFLYING/RIDING is dangerous, take your time and you can enjoy it for the rest of your life! If you rush the learning phase then your life might not be so long.
