You need Std in z-score that eventually helps in finding out the outliers, otherwise the definition of std is the range in which a datapoint might lie in a distribution for eg a datapoint 5 might lie in the 1st STD of the from the mean a datapoint 7 might lie in the 2nd STD from the mean. IN A NORMAL DISTRIBUTION theres this emperical formula of (68%,95%,99.7%) which is described as 68% of the data lies in the range of 1st STD 95% of the data lies in the range of 2nd STD 99.7 of the data lies in the range of 3rd STD and yes anything more or less than these can be considered as outliers but i think that depends upon the situation not sure. (Refer from other sources as i could be wrong since i have limited knowledge as of now but hope this helps)
