Thank you so much for this tutorial. I tried the other ways you mentioned and had nothing but trouble. Now I can do single layered hats with a decent brim.

Yes… lots of people like to make a brim on the machine but I find it tedious and uncomfortable leaning over the machine. You can make a lot of these then sit comfortably in your chair and finish them in front of the tv!

I didn’t know how to do this but I figured there was a way to do it. I did two brims but didn’t know about the waste yarn to guide me. It came out ok but not like yours. Now I will do it this way. Thank you!

This is an old video, Elizabeth, and yet I've still never found a better way to do it! Some people do it without taking it off the machine but I find that very tedious and it sort of pulls on the needles a bit. 🤷♀️

So happy i found this because I tried the other way onto my loops and threads machine and it didn’t work out. I tried it 3 times and all 3 times my stitches were jumping off. I know how to fix dropped stitches and I managed to take off the double brim from the machine and hand knit the rest of the hat with all 3 mistakes but the point of having the machine was so that i could complete the hat on it not just the brim lol. So thank you very much.

I like your tutorial. Can I add a tip please. Start your project wit contrast yarn and do the few rows, now !!! Use (FINE) CROCHET COTTON (about 3m long, of contrast colour) making sure there are no joins or knots in this piece. KNIT ONE ROW ONLY. KNIT REQUIRED LENGTH WITH MAIN YARN, AT THIS RIM EDGE YOU COULD USE THE COTTTON AGAIN. WHEN YOU HAVE ALL YOUR STITCHES CAREFULLY PIC KED UP!! NOW PUT YOUR HAND INSIDE YOUR PROJECT AND PULL OUT YOUR 1st WASTE YARN, YES YOU MUST PULL HARD BUT YOU CAN WIND OFF THE WASTE YARN AN RE USE IT. ( WHEN YOU HAVE CONTINUED WITH PROJECT YARN, YOU CAN DRAW OUT THE SECOND PIECE OF COTTON YARN. MAKE SURE NOT TO CATCH, OR SPLIT THIS WHEN SEWING UP. WORKS GREAT AT THE BEGINNING OF DOUBLE HAT ??? Try it out, you will be surprised ???
@laverneb237211 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this, connecting the brim on the machine is a pain in the neck, literally! And if you want to save your waste yarn and re-use, find the beginning tail and tug on it, like you would do for closing in the top of a hat. You will see that strand tightening up along the bottom of the work. Just go around and pull it out of the stitches for 1 round then you can just unravel all the way around.

can you detach the stitches and put them on knitting needles then make a brim or even decrease to finish the hat instead of pulling it shut?

Yes. (At the time of this video, I didn’t know how to knit!) I have difficulty matching the machine’s gauge so play around with different needles to see what you like best.

I have not started to try the Addi Express yet, but have been contemplating what I could do. Do you think it would be possible to start a circular hat, then cast off the middle of the hat and work the two ends as flat panels, then after leaving enough room for a face, cast on the empty needles and continue to complete the hat, thereby creating a helmet? I am not sure how one would bind off the middle stitches except by putting them on scrap yarn and then crocheting them off.
@sheepishlysharing6 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite following your method (so hard to translate knitting into words sometimes) but there are lots of ways to make a helmet liner or balaclava. Here's a super simple version I did on the Addi: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZjQhGOPrLxsaNk
@DavidNBerg6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the reply, Margaret. I guess not being a knitter I am not clear in what I am saying. My idea was where you cast off on waste yarn to bind off those stitches and then flip the switch to straight knitting for the ones still on the machine, knit a flat panel for a few rows and then go back to circular knitting casting on new stitches on the now empty needles so that the opening was more of an opening and less of a slit. I have no idea if one can switch between circular and straight knitting on the same piece on an Addi.

I am new to this Addi machine and this type of knitting. I want to know if this king size makes different sizes of hats? I make sizes to fit a child age 3-4 up to adult. I donate to the homeless shelters and schools. It would be so much faster for me with this knitting machine. Thank you.

Hello Would you please provide links for me of people who can make things on the Addi Kingsize other than hats and scraves??
@sheepishlysharing11 жыл бұрын
Sorry, Brenda. I don't have links readily available since I haven't had much interest in doing anything but hats/scarves. Google the Addi pattern book and search KZbin for The Fiber Factor challenge 4 (I think that was the challenge number.) Basically, anything you can knit with stockinette can be worked on the Addi.

A Russian knot is very useful in case a need to conceal an extended join of yarn. It is perfect. Find it on the KZbin video. Happy Addi Knitting.

Yes, I'm familiar with Russian knots... not as easy to do with most acrylics (which is what my charity hats are done with) but so pretty!
@florencecox2022 Жыл бұрын
Just a tip if I may. If you use CROCHET COTTON OF A CONTRAST COLOUR. ONE ROW AFTER YOUR WASTE YARN AND THEN KNIT YOUR LENGTH FOR THE RIB. KNIT ONE ROW WITH CROCHET COTTON TOG WITH MAIN YARN., KNIT TO LENGTH REQUIRED AND FINISH OFF ( I DOUBLE MY YARN WHEN I PICK UP THE STITCHES FROM THE MACHINE. ⁰I FEEL IT IS MUCH STRONGER WHEN WE PULL THE TOP TOG. 80 yr old crafter.
@conniealman323711 жыл бұрын
I think it would be a lot easier to do a brim now that we have been showed how to do a E wrap on the addi to cast on. Those stitches will be very easy to be able to be pick up and added to the stitch on the machine. The stitches are longer. Just a thought.

Ooo…. This video is from 2014 (I think) so I’ve probably tried a gazillion different methods since then but I’ve learned that I do prefer this method to the awkward version of doing it on the machine. (I like that I can do a bunch and then later sit in my comfy chair and complete them rather than leaning over the machine!)

My big addi is sticking . I have to give a yank to turn the handle in the same spot each round. Any one else have this problem.
@sheepishlysharing11 жыл бұрын
I haven't had this problem but Suzy Notting has told me you can remove the needle (look for videos showing you how to replace a broken needle) and drop some silicone based lubricant in there. Apparently silicone is key because it won't damage plastic parts. Let me know if it solves your problem!

Hi margaret, i hear that it doesnt work for u to make a brim on the machine, its not hard, try this....... make about 25 rows, then it will be long enough to bring the loops up and put them over the hooksu will get a brim of 5 cm/3 inch ? let me know if it works for u :)

I've tried it. Oughty. I just find it rather tedious! (This is a very old video, btw) These days, I seem to make reversible hats most often on the Addi. It's time for me to get it out again and make use of the scraps and open skeins I've acquired over the year!
@oughtyhalima42728 жыл бұрын
Margaret Olander , yeah but i love ur videos they are verry helpfull, aww well by hand it works just as good, the only thing ive noticed is when i sew the brim that the yarn wont let you widen the hat alot( my english is not verry good so i hope u understand me :) ) do you have some tips or tricks, because if i make the brim on the machine it strech with the hat, but some how i dont get the same result by hand

Your English is wonderful! And yes, it does seem to have stretch problems by hand. I'm sure there is another stitch I can learn to alleviate this problem.

Ok got my Addi King yesterday. followed your tutorial for making the hats and made 4. Yea me.......then..... I tried making one w/a brim from someone else's video and ruin a skein 1/2 of yarn. Then I found yours....tried that but thankfully when this one bombed too it was only Red heart I was throwing away and not expensive. Grrrrr me and brims are not coordinating...lol Oh well....as the old saying goes...back to the drawing board or in this case, the knitting machine. lol
