Hey Rick / AK - great video. I struggle to shoot 3rd gen through my airbrush. Can you do an updated video on how to airbrush 3rd gen? It would be useful to see examples on real models etc.

@RobPearlman - Look for full tutorials covering the use of 3rd Gen paints and their application techniques - including airbrush. In short, the 3rd Gen has a high level of pigment within the paints, providing wonderful coverage when brush painting. As you move to the airbrush you will find that the paints do require thinning, recommended AK11500 Acrylic Thinner. The ratio of thinner to paint will depend upon your local atmosphere, climate, size, type of airbrush/needle, and the type of results you hope to achieve, i.e., overall coverage or small details. My experience is that the thinner-to-paint ratio is higher than with other brands of acrylic paints. I will begin at approximately 30-70 thinner to paint, test, and then adjust, usually adding more thinner until I achieve a smooth flow. This often leads to a ratio closer to 50-50 thinner to paint. The first layer of paint applied should be very light coverage, basically a surface preparation, and then proceed with additional layers to add opacity.

Same question as the above: i can use the brush for adding chipping fluid right?

Hello, Yes you can apply it with a brush, but you have to be careful that the layer of product is not too thick and must be homogeneous. The secret is to apply and let the product dry before painting the next coat of acrylic. The method of application is not important. We hope we have answered your questions.

1) I can't understand this: If I put paint through the medium (3rd gen, because I have all products 3rd gen), how does the water get back to it? 2) Another question: If I'm not using an airbrush, how hard do I have to sand the model? Doesn't reactivation already occur when painting the second layer of paint? 3) On what smallest model does it still look natural? In 40K: dreadnought, marine, guardsman helmet, servo skull? 4) Does it work under metallic colors? 5) Can I do multiple layers, ie base, medium, first layer of paint, medium, second layer of paint... Scrape with gradations? Example: A Rhino has a brown base, was yellow and has been repainted red. So after use the scratches would be red, yellow, brown

Hi, let me try to answer your questions. #1. If I understand correctly, you are wondering how the water penetrates the layer of paint (Gen3). The scrubbing action will thin or even scratch areas of paint and then the water will find its way to the chipping fluid underneath. #2. the ease of chipping (and results) is dependent upon the thickness of the top layer of paint. As a general rule the airbrush will cover with less paint versus paint brush thus making it easier to distress the top layer of paint. It is possible to chip from a brush painted surface, but you will probably find it difficult as you will need to scrub through the heavier paint coverage. #3. Heavy, or multiple coats of chipping fluid will result in larger chips, a thin layer of fluid is more difficult to activate, but will produce small chips. Also, choosing to use Worn Effect vs Heavy Chipping fluids will result in smaller (finer) chips or blemishes. #4. Yes, it will work with metallic paints, as well as enamels & lacquer based paints. 5. Yes, it is possible to have multiple layers of paint/chipping, exposing the different of paint as you work the surfaces - you can stop at any time for only a single color exposed, or continue working areas to expose multiple layers. I hope this helps. Rick

My question is and it is a stupid one: can chipping effects be used from the brush? As I have no access to a airbrush, but I can sometimes be a little lazy sometimes when it comes to modelling.

Hello, "The ideal is to protect each weathering effect after application with a coat of varnish (no matter what type). In this way it will not be damaged or removed at later stages of the work".

As mentioned, the application of a varnish layer (of any type) after chipping will protect the results. Keep in mind that the chipping fluids are activated by water or water-based products. If you choose an acrylic varnish apply with multiple, thin layers, allowing each to dry before adding the next. You don't want to flood the surfaces with more moisture.

Useless products unless you are using acrylic paints for top colors. Don't work with enamels, lacquers or even acrylics with solvent base like Mr. Hobby acrylics. Hairspray is still the best chipping fluid for all paints.

I've used this stuff with lacquers and it's turned out great. you just need to be rougher on the topcoat (I've used 2500-grit sandpaper, nylon abrasive brush, and a sewing needle) to expose the chipping fluid to the water. I've found lacquers are even easier to use than regular acrylics since you have more control over the areas that chip, and the chipping even tends to look more realistic (lacquers actually chip while acrylic tends to peel if you're not careful).
