Tutorial For USB Port Repair or Replacement on a Garmin Nuvi 40LM, 42LM, 50LM, 52LM, 2598LMT, & More

Most of the time you only need to refresh the broken soldering joints on your old Mini USB Port. However, in some cases, you have to completely replace it with a new one. The new USB port can be purchased from Aliexpress but you have to make sure it is the right one that matches your old one. Since it is different in every model of Garmin I didn't put a link for it.

I suspect I have a failed cable port on my 2595LMT Garmin. If I press the cable into the port it powers up and shows the charging symbol on the screen. But after I let it rest that way, it eventually shows LOW BATTERY and shuts off. I already replaced the battery as it was not showing capacity as per your other video.

I agree, the symptoms are exactly that of a loose or broken USB Port. You will need to refresh the soldering joints.

Thank you for the video. Mini USB port in aliexpress link looks different from what you are using on video. Do you know where I can find same one you are using? Or should I buy the one in link and cut black plastic pins and fit it?

My Garmin Streetpilot 7500 has an abnormal and annoying behavior. When the power is connected, sometimes the unit does not turn on. I suspect of a bad capacitor, but looking at these motherboards, it seems impossible to replace a bad cap. What do you think? Replace the motherboard? Where to look for a spare one?

It is hard to diagnose and pinpoint the exact faulty component, so yes getting a new Motherboard may be safer options. You can get used one of these on eBay for fairly reasonable prices, and use the motherboard from it. However before you do that make sure it is not the cradle, as that could also cause sudden power loss.

Hello, do you repairs on other devices? We have a Garmin GDL 50/51/52 and the Micro USB connector came off. Is that something you might be able to take a look at?

I can take a look at it, but I have never worked on that exact model before. So I don't have the spare parts available which means I need to order it and it could take up to 30 days to get it. Most Garmin parts come from Taiwan or China, which is why it could take so long to get them.

Although I haven't tried all Soldering Irons, but I did try nearly a dozen different ones and my favorite is Weller WES51, because it is small and very practical. Great video, thanks. My Nuvi 40 charges ok but the data interface does not work, so it can't be updated. I assume this may have been caused by voltage spikes generated by a bad battery in my Toyota Yaris. It also blew 2 different USB mem sticks in the radio. Is there a USB interface chip / level shifter chip on the board that I can replace? (I thought that is what you were going to replace in this video.) Do you know if I can get the schematic?

I don't think Garmin will reveal the Schematic for this, however most common case is a loose USB Port that leads to data sync issues. Also you can still update the maps using the Micro SD Card slot.

EDIT: Never mind, I got it back together again but I first had to uncrease a fold in the ribbon cable which was fighting me. @@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thank you so much for replying. I don't really need the schematic. Yes, I have updated via the SD slot. I opened the unit and took out the board but found the USB port solder connections look good and I don't think I should touch them even with my tiniest iron. Problem now is the screen ribbon cable will not lock back into the connector. It doesn't click and I am sure nothing broke when I removed it but maybe something did snap. Now I am stumped and of course it is inoperable. The flap folds up and down but I see no way that it would latch.

@@iconoclad It will only latch in place if the ribbon cable is inserted all the way in, not halfway in. If the latch is broken there is little you can do except to replace the board. However, there is a minimal chance of success if you use a thin film on the top side of the connector where the latch is to hold the cable in place without the latch. You will also need to put a piece of tape on the top to prevent it from coming loose.

Hi, the maps on a SD Card must be inside the folder named Garmin and the name must be gmapsupp.img So assuming the SD Card reader is Drive G: the file should be like this G:\garmin/gmapsupp.img

I have a nuvi 55 and when I try to charge it the charger shakes in the port and only seems to charge at a certain position too. Do you think that based on this that the problem is it just being loose or that it may need a full replacement?

Most of the time it is just lose and you can fix it by re-soldering it. However in very rare cases the Mini USB port plug can break which will require replacement.
