From my own experience: The Bic pens like you used in the video will tolerate oven heat temperature very close to those recommended on the clay package (usually about 225-250 degrees), just keep an eye on it during baking (you may need to adjust/add baking time for a lower temperature). It may be easier for some to form the wand around the white barrel and skip the foil step (lightly sanding the white barrel before applying the clay will also help with adhesion before baking). Utilizing the white barrel would also makes it much easier to insert a new ink barrel or change colors. You can remove the ink barrel cleanly with pliers by gripping and gently twisting on the black plastic tip (skipping the cutting of the white barrel step and making for a cleaner edge-I promise it does work). I've made polymer clay pens before and they've turned out wonderfully.

Definitely! You just have to make sure you don't squeeze on the foil paper, otherwise it might get stuck. If you have a long piece of metal or hard plastic (that can be baked), it would be better than a foil paper

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this yet - but you can get the tip & ink insert out without cutting... just use a pair of pliers, and grasp at the black part (of the pen in the video - this part can be different colors, depending on brand) hold tube (white part of pen) twist to loosen, and gently pull out while twisting.

thanks for the tip Elizabeth! I will definitely remember that for my next pen tutorial. My only suggestion for the HP wand is to remove the whole pen altogether, otherwise the wand is too bulky if you keep the casing in there :)

I will definitely keep that in mind if I do another pen-clay item =D My suggestion is to remove the whole pen altogether for THIS project because you want the wand to go from thick to thinner. If the pen case is still in there for this project, it won't transition as nicely or you might have to make it longer to compensate for the case being in there =D

Try using your hands instead of your pincers while twisting the foil :) Sometimes we have less control with the pincers =D

You can bake the plastic pen part just pull out the tip and ink tube by wiggling the point and it will slide right out. I make these pens all the time. Iyou did give me some. Great ideas thanks!

Surely! it's all a case per case situation for this project. Depending on the pen, but since I don't want people to bake the plastic (JUST for safety sake), I avoid encouraging plastic in the oven :) safety first :)

if the foil is REALLY stuck, why not just try and compact it in deeper so that there's enough room for the ink cartridge? If it won't come out, force it in lol. Otherwise, try some baby oil to try and convince it to come out :) And thank you for the awesome words =D

This is awesome but you could've made it 100x less complicated! You can just pull the ink part out by grabbing the small plastic nose piece that is right underneath the brown ballpoint part. On the pen you used in this video, that small piece is black. Then you just have an empty plastic tube and you can put the clay directly on that and it's ok to bake it like that as well.

Some plastic pens are bake able,when I do polymer clay pens I use papermate pens that work and bake just fine in the oven.I do take out the ink before I bake them though,I hope is helped! I loved your tutorial by the way ;)

Yeah I guess for the younger viewers , the first time I tried baking a pen it was one of the bic with the hard clear plastic casing , and that one exploded . But I've watched various tutorials in which the white plastic bids pens can be baked safely , if you ever. Want to try. But the pen is awesome I love Harry Potter.

You can simplify the process by using clay that can be baked or air dried . Make it directly on pen air dry it then coat it with about five coats of clear nail polish.

You can bake the pen as long as you take the ink out. Bake same temp for up to twenty minutes. It should be a bic pen that is more bendy as opposed to the really hard plastic. I've never had a problem. This way all the pens you make are refillable.
