The 2 screws on the back of the laser are potentiometers and shouldn't be messed with without knowing what you are doing. They don't actually increase the power of the laser per say. They control the laser resistance. Benq and Lite On use the same laser and are notorious for dying. You can lower the resistance and get some more life out of it. BUT if you lower it too much, the laser can burn your game disc and kill it. Adjusting them without a multi meter is a desperation/last option solution.

it wont burn your game disc will it? pretty sure you mean you lower the resistance too much therefore provide too much power to the laser and burn it out. (the laser) im putting a new laser in an old xbox and i might try increading resistance to protect (undervolt) the laser a bit. so long as it still reads, as i dont want it to burn out as fast as the last one. but then again, if you weaken the laser it might have to work twice as hard to read discs and thus still wear out just as fast anyway. especially if you are using backup/ burned games that usually especially after microsoft added that extra .2gb or whatever to edge of discs in XGD3 that mean we have to overburn discs to 8.7gb on 8.5gb discs which means a lesser quality burn thats harder to read... eh, why am i still typing. this video is old. xbox 360's are old. i am old. i am tired. i am going to bed. :-)

@Cuntseeded i dont agree, i have fixed many consoles drives this way and they have lasted year(s) so yes maybe your method is the "proffesional" way but my way is affective

@dazza723 i personally hate messing with lasers, there is no point of no return once you hit 360 it restarts, tbh its usually easier to just replace the laser if you cant get it going after a little

@malekai777 you cant tell what kind of drive you have by the model, you 60g could have any of the four drives that where made for fats, only way to know is open it up

Try using the left pot screw. Turn that slightly to the left. The left controls the games and right is for CD/DVD

1/2 human Pause the vid at :09. Looking from this angle its the right screw. Rotate it 180 degrees, then it will be on your left looking from the back side of the tray. Rotate the screw counterclockwise just till you barley notice it moved. Then see how it works.

I took your advice and used a Q-Tip with a bit of rubbing alcohol on the tip to clean the disk reader, but it still isn't reading disks. Do you have any other ideas I could try to fix it? :/

Heres one for ya...mine has been updated,has worked fine till the past month. No matter what game i put in 360 or reg xbox game, it just says reading,push the eject button wont open,turn off,fan still runs,unplug for a min and plug back up,then push disc tray button and opens fine. System menu operates fine ??? havent played on it in a month does this whenever try to play something

hey! the problem i am having with my disc drive is that it is stuck open only about an inch and will not slide back and forth even half an inch. the drive was stuck closed and my sister tried prying it open with a knife so it is now jammed therefor i cannot pull the tray out far enough to fully reveal the band or what ever may be stopping the tray from moving. i dont want to force it and make it even worse, but please let me know if you have any ideas what could be causing this!!

how do u get ur disc tray off the tracks. iv seen vids where a guy slides something then it allows u too but my disc tray doesn't have that. my xbox is the slim and it looks like theres plastic blocking where u slide it

I cleaned the laser off exactly as you said, but the xbox still just says "Reading" when I put a game in. I'm trying to figure out exactly how to adjust the screws, the model optical drive I have is a DG-16D2S Phillips Lite-on Drive. You definitely need a multimeter before you adjust the laser's screw. Pot tweaking it too low can fry your laser, don't do it without a multimeter!

K my xbox can read and play all my games like a champ, but when i try putting in new games, it says open tray or it plays and says the disc is unreadable at a random time. i exchanged 3 copies of lost planet 2 and got the same issue. no scratches on the discs. is this disc drive related? or am i going to have to get a new xbox? its an original model thats 4 years old.

i kicked my tray when i realized it was not working. now i try to repair it and made it worst because i thought it was the gear. it wont close and the lens wont start up. i went from point A to point negative 2. please.:( i dont think all these disc cleaning errors will work but i will give it a try. i think it has something to deal with the gears though.

okk .... when ever i put in a disk into my xbox 360 console it would fade to black as if it were going to play , but then it would disconnect me from xbox live send me back to the dash board and connect me to xbox live again .... i also tried it offline and it did the same thing .... please help

Microsoft could evade this issue easily by just allowing people to download a free digital copy of their physical copy or fully install Xbox 360 game discs via Windows network offline. But this kind of costumer service is usually too much in game console industry.

how did that go for you?.... without a multimeter to make 1 10th of a mm adjustment and then check resistence is still in spec you probably cranked that resistance way down out of spec, and laser strength way up and burned it out pretty fast.. i suspect it didnt work well for long. this youtuber really should have cautioned people on that and given instrucions on using a multimeter to measure its resistance after you change it etc. he probably destroyed a fair few xbox 360's with this video. at least most of them were probably not reading discs well or even at all before though i guess. and a new laser is pretty cheap and easy to replace.
