Awesome. That was extremely helpful. Folks I would really appreciate some advice regarding shipping costs as I am about to place my first order and getting all sorts of quotes. Based on your experience, if the total weight of my products is between 250 - 300 kg and I’m using air freight. Roughly speaking, what should I expect to pay excluding duties and tax? Between 1000 pounds and 1500 pounds or between 1500 and 2000? Or more? Many thanks.

Can you just resell the products you source from Alibaba if you don't want to go for the private label option? I don't own a business atm and don't have any logos or branding for any products so wouldn't it be easier to just select products and resell for a higher price on amazon? of course I would have to ask the manufacturer/supplier if their product is branded or has a licensed patent if tht was the case then I couldn't resell it, but if it was just a generic, non-branded product then it'd be okay, right?

Yea you can get a small test batch to sell on amazon. Running out of stock isn’t really a problem - once you know the product will sell, you can just order a bigger bulk order

Use your own freight forwarder. You don't want your products being listed as undervalued by Chinese shipment companies and charging you the correct amount and pocketing the difference.

Hey, apologies for the novice question - but once I’ve paid vat importing the goods - so purchasing from the manufacturer + customs & shipping, do I also have to pay vat on the goods when I sell them on Amazon/ shopify? So essentially paying vat twice?

If you’re registered for VAT then you’ll pay 20% import VAT, and VAT when you make sales, so yea. But don’t register for VAT until you hit 85k in sales

My question is, what do you do once you have your test batch in your house. I am confused at this step as there are labels to print etc.. for each product you send individually. There are some grey areas that aren't too easy to find on the interweb. Or do you send the entire batch to Amazon FBA?
@oliverdenyer4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill! It's definitely a bit confusing the first time round :) you need to get a barcode from GS1, then you put that on your listing. Then Amazon can put the labels on the products for you

@TheTerenceking4 жыл бұрын
I doubt anyone spending small sums of money like £10K on Alibaba can really make money anymore, there are several issues here. 1, Many of the companies on Alibaba are not in fact manufacturers. 2. Most of the products that are made in China and offered on Alibaba are sold directly by Chinese into the western markets. 3. Manufacturers get a drawback in China from the Chinese government this is the money they will make so they do not technically need to make a profit after that so essentially they will make money before your buying price. 4. If you establish a market in the west for a product there are many many people around the world watching you too see if you are making a profit so essentially it makes it almost impossible to sustain a margin in the long term so any wins are lost soon after. 5. people in the early days of Amazon did make money but now Amazon have actively gone to China and trained all the Chinese factories asking why are you bothering to supply the western wholesalers, why not sell direct, they are also doing ALL the work for them and charging them for this service but the factory still makes a good profit. 6. People in Asia can live on a lot less than people in the West so there living overheads are minimal compared to ours so how on earth can you really win? 7. Buying on Alibaba is a real risk as the supplier can just send rubbish to you and say tough! 8. There are ways to win but winning does not come as easily as just shopping on Alibaba. Firstly you need to build a good solid relationship with the supplier, build on a good deal of communication (but just let them think all you do is talk) over a long period of time. buy a little test the market make sure that's okay but be certain you are buying from the right supplier from the outset. Knowing more about the product than the supplier is unlikely to be possible but it is possible to deal in items that are either very simple OR you know a lot about. If you do not you are skating on thin ice. learn as much as you can about the components that make the product. So if you buy fireplace pokers learn about the metals and coatings before you go too far. Believe me most of you understatement Chinese knowledge but the average Chinese knows more than you about what makes a good product from a bad one. Westerners look at something on the surface and if it looks okay then its okay, Chinese like to scratch the surface to see what's under it, weigh the item and then stick it in water and see if it floats!!!!!! (if its made in China, when it comes to imported goods into China, Chinese are as stupid as us), I was amazed myself when first exposed to this, compared to them we are dumb bunnies. 9. Most of the Chinese play the long game. So when they sell item retail on Amazon they may be prepared to lose money on it for a year before uping the price, this is very common and normal practice for them so be sure you do not spend all your money on one item, some Chinese are so rich they can easily afford to do this on 10% of their lines without worrying at all, in the meantime, you may be having palpitations!! I have this situation at the present you can go see for yourself and see what you would do in my position online right now there are DVD holders for car headrests (on eBay) selling for £1.89 including P+P now the cost to post is £1.40 by second class mail. I get this product very cheap from China and I assure you none of you would be getting a better deal than I am on it, I was selling it really well for £7 and then this one supplier come in the market and drop the price to £2.69 and now to £1.89. So they are selling it for below cost as they are stocking it in a warehouse in UK and not even shipping it directly from China to the customer they have to pay eBay fee and Paypal (and tax maybe lol) and import duty. So tell me if you have spent £10K on this product line what would you do right now? If you have an answer please let me know. I have contacted the seller and asked them if they are aware they are making a loss on this item in a hope they are making a mistake and may correct it (you never know funnier things have happened!) in the meantime I have to wait and see if they just continue to keep doing this. 10. The big chinese sellers buy up stock at the lowest possible price after negotiating for months, they then buy huge quantities (£500K orders that are repeated) and do not ask too much of the factory (factories in China want to churn stuff out not fiddle with poxy little £10K orders with alterations) and then they sell it at a loss for a few months to get rid of the competition and then slowly increase the price again. This is standard procedure. In doing this these companies earn millions each year but will have 300, 000 lines or more. When there is no more margin-left they move on to the next product, basically the recipe for stuffing up all items on the market. It's all about volume in the end and who has the biggest pockets. The little guy gets crushed in the end. 11. An interesting video i watched on KZbin a while ago showed a western guy selling massages on Amazon from a few years ago, he was doing great and was using this as an example of his success.....i went to amazon and looked for him.......the price he had been selling at was now half and only Chinese sellers of the product not one western. You can check for yourself the hitachi motor multiple speed hand held massagers, there are many sellers of them. I rest my case. 12. Oliver I am especially interested to hear your views on what i have stated here. I am not saying things are impossible in the short term but in the long term hmmmmm, it may be so.
@hanzo76163 жыл бұрын
The only thing you can do to combat these problems is volume selling. Look at the retail sector. They only make 5-20% profit at best. Most of their profitability comes from volume (I believe Amazon also has a 5% profit margin). That's it. Also with regards to someone coming in and pricing you out of your product at £7 to £2. The solution is simple. If that product is not profitable AT ALL anymore or simply not worth the hassle. Move on. There are many other products available that will do good on eBay. It's all a numbers game at the end of the day.
@siyuanlin66683 жыл бұрын
@@hanzo7616 HI Hanzo, I understand what you are saying but I feel the retail market for westerners is coming to an end if you consider the long term of what is happening it will end as a Chinese supplier against a Chinese supplier and then they will fight till they are selling at a loss. Then the only one left standing will be doing so to keep the workers working. The internet opened this can of worms a while ago and Amazon now is playing it but the end game is coming, when it does come I feel there may be some resurgence of the high street but in a more entertaining way, let's hope that Amazon is playing too big a part in that as frankly the culture of that company leaves me feeling very cold. Even the gurus do not like the company ethos.

I would be careful about the TRADE ASSURANCE. It’s not worth the paper it’s written on. I purchased 50 scooters when they came the quality was so poor I could not sell them. I contacted alibaba requesting a return due to the quality. They asked me too provide evidence which I did . They sided with the supplier. I appealed, again no help.The contact to Alibaba was hard work . I lost 10k on this one purchase. Now they are asking for more on shipping costs too. Bottom line is it’s a big risk.
