Best year for the 701s if you ask me. Don't let people tell you that these suck. Any Euro III engine (63 or 67 bhp) with the Evo II camshaft and a good tune eats 701s for dinner. All of them. Believe me. ;)

@@the690shed and why is that ? what is better in first and the only one 701 with "old" engine ?

Hey boys and girls, I just forgot to tell you about one thing! Make sure to check that the pins that hold the rollers are correctly secured at both end! Take a screwdriver for exemple and try to push the axle out on on both sides. They tried to make these parts more reliable by making the pins a bit lighter and changed the pining method and the design of the arm (the edge around the pin) but at the end it didn't work quiet well resulting in the pin beeing not correctly secured in. And they become loose with time, and fall in the engine, ending in terrible damages.
@memeemeen5 жыл бұрын
Might be a stupid question but can you tig weld the pin and arm to prevent it from coming out. Well i guess the problem is solved now with new set of rocker arm?

Do you still have the bike? My exhaust one has failed with radial play it’s a 2012 bike and I’ve done over 33k miles on it, it got really hard to start. The intake is not so bad but the bearing is failing and catches a little bit. I’m hoping the replacements last the remainder the life of the bike.
@Britishshooter6 жыл бұрын
ALWAYS replace any pre 2015 rocker arms on any 690 no matter what they look like. The pre 2015 rockers fail because the needle rollers move out of the arm because of a fault in the design which was meant to assist preening the rocker around the roller cage ends but they took away too much material. You can see that in this video if you look hard.The 2015 onwards look different if you inspect them, they do not have a deep rebate around the ends of the needle cages and should be stamped 15, or 16 or 17 etc. NEVER risk blowing your engine up for the sake of putting in a £150 set of upgraded rockers. Mine went at 8000 miles on a brand new 2014 ER.

YES! I was just going to say this... I always noticed a bit of a noisy clapping sound out of my '09. Not until a valve check did I notice they are loose, a lot of scoring everywhere. It's just not good to have them in there. Such a shame as they are not cheap. But what can we do. Always do things the right way on a bike.

Awesome video man. English is perfectly understandable. You know of any aftermarket upgraded rockers for these engines? Can't find any here in u.s.
@the690shed6 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, I appreciate, this pushes me to do more videos with me speaking over, it's less time consuming than making comments... There aren't any company making aftermarket rockers (as we speak) for those engines, reason is quiete simple: they are cheap and if you follow the rule to replace them every ~20'000 km / 12'000 miles you are not supposed to have any issues with them. On top of that I would advise people to check them once per year. That's what I do. It only takes an hour with a couple of beers, no big deal...
@thelist13726 жыл бұрын
@@the690shed Right on,just hit 12k and was making sure there wasn't improved version that I could replace with. Though I did hear the design was slightly tweaked in 2015 to improve reliability. Forgot exact details why. Keep the videos coming! Btw that clear clutch cover is beautiful, I'd buy one from you if you ever started to sell them. I thought it was an off shelf piece until I found your Facebook! I love these motors. Absolutely astonishing the power extracted from a 700cc single. More hp that 1700cc Harley vtwin!! Haha

Do you know if the 701 has fixed the problem with the 2015 and earlier KTM?
@the690shed6 жыл бұрын
You mean the 2016 701 with the EURO III engine? The loose pin issue has been fixed yes, but they still wear out, at the pin, resulting in radial play in the roller. 20'000 km max, and check them once per year, my 2cts.

What year are those rocker arms? I have read that 2015 ones are reliable
@the690shed6 жыл бұрын
Yes some people say that, but the fact is that 2015 models also had the same problems, axles/pins (whatever you call them) escaping from the rocker. So I don't know if they had late "14" stamped rocker arms or if 2015 rockers can also be a problem. To be 100% sure, I throw in the bin every rocker arms stamped "14" or "15". As simple as that. fs2.directupload.net/images/150509/b5r2xeaw.jpg www.ktmforums.com/forums/attachments/duke/30042d1429516165-rocker-arms-again-rocker_failure_web.jpg
@Britishshooter6 жыл бұрын
Nordikbikes, good point you make. It is essential to check for the new design which is simple to identify just from removing the cam cover. The old design has a rebate around the ends of the rocker cages (see my post above) the new ones do not. Some 2014 rockers (but NEVER actual 2014 bikes) would be OK because engines are stored up to year before assembly. However, to be safe get them stamped 15 onwards, later the better.

I'm going through throttle wheelie withdrawal. My 2016 ER (18000 km) drove strong on the way to work a couple months ago but at the end of the day it began falling over while I was driving home. I found the roller on my intake rocker looks just like the exhaust rocker at the end of your video. It's sad that these engines can't be trusted and that the valve train sounds like a very loud "sewing machine" :). So I'm about to go hunting for needles and to see if they chewed up my cam - do you think I should tear down the entire engine to be safe with the bearing rollers? The new engine (2019?) has a bit of history now, having been in the Husky 701 since 2017 (I think) - does anyone know if the valve train in the new engine is any better and/or quieter?
@the690shed4 жыл бұрын
Hi, what issue did occur? The loose pin issue on the intake rocker arm?
@xeeded4 жыл бұрын
@@the690shed I was expecting to have a problem with valve clearances but discovered the intake rocker arm to be flopping around as soon as I pulled the cover. I was so gutted to find the apparently empty bearing race that I walked away from the garage and have left it sitting. I decided to rewatch your (excellent) video - having hoped to never experience such a failure on a 2016 - to inspire me to begin the repair. At this point my concern is with finding all of the shrapnel and potential collateral damage to the camshaft. BTW I think you were struggling to remember the word "shim" where you used "washer".

Help yourself by checking them, this is periodic maintenance on these engines, so whether or not you are in doubt, are suspecting faulty rocker arms, or bought it used, you have to check them. This is the purpose of this video btw... Periodic maintenance just like valve clearance, engine oil change, greasing bearings, suspension maintenance etc.
