It seems this method does not work for siding, where the wall splines are vertical. There needs to be a non 90 degree slope?

Hi, it should work. You might need to reset the XForm for the splines though. The alignment algorithm works best when the spline's axis is orientated to the worlds. If you have any problems, feel free to send the splines in a simplified scene to our support team.

right 16 hours later you can finally have 2 lines and 4 rows of tiles.. i mean comon, so many parameters, takes more times and effort than just doing the job manually

Might I suggest cutting. to. the. chase. Here's a script: Railclone 3 can do tile roofs from merely a spline at the edge of all roof surfaces. Here's a preset. Here's how you change color. You'll probably have to make your own material because the preset materials are poorly done. 20 second video. Not 20 minutes.
